One thing I found in my axle swaping quest was - Most crew cab 20 series Chevy trucks (3/4 tons) if not all from the 80's have the same spring perch width and shock mount as 1 ton trucks. Don't know if this helps, but it might help some one out in a future search.

One other thing to add - You could always estimate the amount of fluid you need for a fill, and add it through the vent tube until you can deal with the stuck plug.

A small ratchet strap hooked to the grille guard in combination with a high lift jack or even an old bumper jack works excellent to keep the tow bar at the right height to hook up. You can make small height adjustments that way.
