One of my civi 6.2 's did something that sounds similar. (Heavy knock/Black Smoke) It was an intermittent thing. I figured it must be an Injector or IP. I didn't do anything to fix it and it has not done it for 15,000 miles.

I agree 60G's work good for me. I put a new set in my M1008 in the middle of last winter and it has started and worked great.

The 700r4 is not that fun of a swap with the 1031's PTO powered Generator. I have also been thinking of a gear swap on a 1031 for more speed using the stock tires.

It sounds like air getting into the fuel system. My M1008 seems to do the same thing. If it sets for a few days it will crank over and almost start right away, then you have to crank and crank to get it to take off again. If it runs two days in a row. It fires right up. I am going to check mine...

I've switched between std and gear reduction starters before and used the same mounting bolts. Would be best to have new ones. The only differences I found was the support bracket and the battery cable stud is slightly larger.
