I just filled my 1986 M1009 today. It is original with 23,000 miles.
16 MPG with highway and some around town driving.
The 1984 M1009 gets 18-20 MPG, it too is mostly stock. Has a locally installed exhaust system that allows for better flow. It's lighter too, less sheet metal due to rust...
If you want to measure the resistance of the GP;
Set your multimeter to measure resistance.
Shorts your test leads together, meter should read close to 0 ohms.
Disconnect the wire going to the GP.
Attach one of the multimeter leads to the GP where the wire was connected to and the other...
I also changed the thermostat and all hoses on my newly acquired M1009 yesterday.
Fortunately the thermostat housing bolts came out with out any issues. Required some moderate persuasion to get the housing neck removed. All of the items that I changed out were original. The gasket material was...
I installed a DB2-4544 from Oregon Fuel Injection in my M1009 last summer.
Oregon Fuel Injection, diesel fuel injector pump, injector, turbocharger for Chevy GM diesel Duramax, 6.6 L, 6.5 L & 6.2 L
10,000 miles later it still works just fine.

I first used a 4070.
Now installing the 4071 filter. After 2 filter changes, next to no rust and gunk in them now.
Coolant looks to be much cleaner now.

Yes you can test them in the engine as long as you have a good connection to the blade connector and ground.
I test them out of the engine as shown in the attached photo.
It is always important when performing resistance tests and voltage measurements that you have good reliable connections...
tstone is correct.
Without getting in to the electrical design of the GP controller. Here is a simple answer:
The wait light comes on for a shorter duration that the GP heat time.
This is the way the GP card is designed to function.
I am assuming that the designers of the engine wanted the...
To clarify your description of your situation.
"but now the relay closes as I turn the key on, the wait light comes on for a few secs, goes off, but the relay doesn't close."
Do you mean it "doesn't open" after the wait light goes out?
If so, check a couple of things.
Low batteries will cause...

I finally had time to paint the S280 today. It was a beautiful day here in PA.
The brown and black will have to wait until I can find the proper camo pattern for the shelter.
And yes, it is the Behr brand from Home Depot.
Thanks WSU for providing the color formula.

Hi Steve,
Welcome to Steel Soldiers.
It sounds as if you have a few defective glow plugs.
Check each GP with an ohm meter. Disconnect the wire on the GP and check the resistance from the connector on the GP to ground. They should be in the 1-2 ohm range.
Let us know what you find.
