The turbo will actually help keep the engine cool. If you are pulling a hill and you let the engine lug, the egt's will go right up.Drop a gear or two and let the turbo spool up and the egt's will drop 300 degrees.

A "home made,assembled" vehicle does not need to meet dot standards. But you would need to document where pieces parts came from and have the vehicle inspected (at least in Ohio).
Private Depts have to keep a piece equipment in use for an agreed to amount of time, then it is theirs to dispose of anyway they like. Could end up on Govdeals, but most likely would just be parked out front with a for sale sign on it.

Keep in mind that when the transfer case is placed in neutral, it locks both front and rear driveshafts together. That is another good reason to drop the rear shaft.
The other PA-48 is at the Air Force Museum in Wright Pat. I remember going over to the auxiliary hangar to look at it. I'm glad to see that it is intact. Who's yard is that?
