Ok, cool.
I do use the hand throttle to keep the RPM's between 700 and 1000 rpms during the 5 minute warm up period. Then, I release the hand throttle and it settles at 600.
The "wandering idle" that the truck did when I first bought it has completely stopped since I cleaned up the fuel system...
I did run through the search function and didn't find what I was looking for...not exactly, anyway.
Symptoms on a '71 M813:
I seem to have a fair bit of vibration at idle, just sitting. The vibration is everywhere. The tailgate rattles, body panels rattle, the tool box lid rattles, the cab...
LOL...you guys are gonna give this guy the heebie jeebies. He'll never trust this truck!
I get it though, good information to have. Could save big problems down the road.
Ok, thanks to my Wife Soldier B helper, the rubbing around was isolated to the parking brake not fully releasing. That's my fault because I adjusted it too tightly.
The howling and the occasional thunk, I'm still working on.
Well, I'm glad I take a lot of short test drives.
Something is definitely going wrong, but I haven't been able to identify it yet. Once or twice, I heard sort of a howling when I drive the truck. It really reminds me of a dry throw-out bearing but I'm not certain that's what it is. I think it...
Really?? Very interesting. Mine is just one year newer than yours. Now you have me wondering which style I have. I really need to clean off my data tag and post the info here.
Heh, the reason I asked for confirmation of your solutions is to shorten my own learning curve. I'm not having any problems *yet* but it's probably only a matter of time so the more knowledge I absorb now, the less painful it'll be later...
Over,
It sounds like you had two problems? A leaky return line and gummed up injectors?
For cold starts (32F and colder), my truck wants exactly what the dash data plate says- "Apply 1/3 foot throttle." It definitely does not like more than that. The warmer the temps, the less pedal it wants.
I put some up when I first bought it, but I can crawl around today and take more detailed photos of everything.
I just finished reading many threads in the archives on axle boots. Sheesh, what a mess. None of them seem any good. I can't see any reason to torture myself with single piece boots...
Here we go... :tigger:
Took the truck to Home Despot for a load of large, heavy stuff and NAPA for parts.
- The front axle passenger side boot now has a small split at the bottom. A little grease escaped and flung greasy poo on the inside of the tire.
That puts me squarely in...
Hm. They ain't all that and a bag of chips. Mainly, I was curious about them as a better parking brake and *maybe* an e-brake in case of service brake system failure.
Interesting stuff! I also recently heard that some 809's were upgraded to Allison automatic transmissions. I wonder if these early trucks that were rebuilt, were equipped with autos, alongside the 939's that were being built?
My first impressions were that the 809 series was very homogenous in...
