How much did you pay for it?
I was looking at them some time ago and they could be had for 50 bucks. Now that I own a humvee, I don't see them below $180 :-(
I was told that this is a standard Chevy size.
Here is the size as tested by a pro (not me). https://goo.gl/photos/BUZrqBSYPcXMCtfa9 M14x1.5
I haven't bought my replacement yet -- can someone confirm this size is right? I don't want to buy few dozen just to find out that they're wrong?
That's what I'm finding.
The one you posted would be 1,600 smackaroons by the time we figured shipping.
That's a lot of bread.
Hopefully someone will chime in with an option in the 600 bucks range

I agree with you that hydro winches are much better.
When you say that they can be had cheap... I'm hoping that you have a source that I'm not aware of because I've been looking at fleaBay and they're around a grand!
I would much rather do a hydraulic one if I can find it priced reasonably.
If...
For me it's the cost.
I've seen them go for $1,000 or more on fleabay.
I got 12k one from hazard freight with an intention of putting it on receiver plate and having ability to move it between front and rear.
When not in use, she'll be stored in the truck's bed, over the wheel well -- at least...
What do you mean when you say "commercial winch"?
I just got this 12,000lbs one https://m.harborfreight.com/12000-lb-off-road-vehicle-electric-winch-with-automatic-load-holding-brake-61256.html
If I can just run it at 24VDC that would be awesome.

Another thought would be to find rubber hose the correct diameter, split it lengthwise and slide it over the metal bar.

I was thinking of using thin pipe insulation. That black foam with peel tape that we're supposed to wrap exposed water pipes in the basement.
