    M925a2 Power Surge

Factory block mounted spin on coolant filter. Can be mounted here or next pad rearward. The unused pad is the coolant taps for the turbo. Heater core supply is at rear of block, and returns to water inlet pipe up by water pump, I believe. Still have to investigate it.

    M925a2 Power Surge

While the turbo was apart, I sent the compressor housing/cover out to be mirror polished. Though I typically don't agree with chrome on an MV, in this case I do want the engine to identify as not stock with the hood open, so going all gloss black engine with a chrome-like polished turbo...

Degreased the trans, drained the oil, and pulled the SAE #1 clutch housing with mechanical linkage off. Will soon install the SAE #2 clutch housing with hydraulic release. Want to size up the clutch and flywheel on back of the engine before final assembly. Supplied shop air into the feed...

    Common 6CTA8.3 Oil Leaks?

Front crank seal, front timing cover, and front timing case to block. Those are the most prevelant areas, and sounds like one or several could be yours also. Because of the direction the crank spins, it could be throwing it to the driver side if it is a seal leak.

Trouble-shooting the Protective Control Box in a 5-ton

A2 should fire almost instantly if in a good state of tune. Batteries over 5 years old will likely be well below their rated CCA value, and will quickly drop voltage when cranking, even though you can not hear this in starter speed until voltage is way down. The other aspect of the a2 shut...

    Exhaust Brake on an M35A2

Only an idle amount because you are not on the throttle. An exhaust brake valve does not have to mount directly to the turbo. There are factory applications where it is further downstream. Here is a good single page brochure of it from a Cummins perspective, as it is an option with them...

Getting ready to pull the 13 speed out of the storage rack, degrease it, and pull the clutch housing off. Will reseal the input shaft while it is out, and update the range selector valve to the latest revision.

    M925a2 Power Surge

Ordered about $200 in parts today to replace the ISL front and rear crank seals while the engine is out, plus a new oil pan gasket to change the pan to the mil one with axle clearance. Also adding spin on block mounted coolant filter. New exhaust manifold gaskets to reposition turbo, turbo...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

    Tan probably hates you too.

Thanks for checking. I'm going to make an attempt to compare motor mount hole locations with the other 2 flywheel housings I have. They may be comparable, or easily adaptable if I can re-drill or shift the bushings in the mount up/down.

Interest in the 8.3L core engine and 6 speed manual trans is much lower than I anticipated. I'll just be taking them in for scrap next weekend. Can't even get $100 for either of them.

    M925a2 Power Surge

Fan clutch, front mount, and oil pan/pickup all should carry over OK. Doing math on flywheel housing now. The stock mil one for use with the Allison MT654CR is 29mm (1.1") deeper than standard (thanks Will!). So, I am considering to mill 29mm off of it to make it standard depth, then just...

Can I set my subscribe as in if < $1000ea?

    M925a2 Power Surge

Seems the ISL has 4 holes in the head front and center, I may be able to carry my stock Horton air-clutched fan over. Hope to. Will measure this pattern and check when home tonight.

Latest concern, flywheel housing. Cummins online seems to indicate the flywheel housing which mates to the MT654CR auto trans is "extra deep". This would likely prevent me from using it directly to mate to the 13 speed Road Ranger trans. I do have 2 traditional flywheel housings, of which one...

    M925a2 Power Surge

Studied the 8.3L in the truck more yesterday. I need to get lucky on 3 things for this to work, which "should" go OK from a visual: 1. Front mount carry-over from 8.3L to ISL, looks to be same 4 bolt pattern, 2 per side at an angle into front of engine. 2. Would like to use the flywheel...

    M925a2 Power Surge

There is a shorter ISL oil filter available, LF9548, but it looks like there is clearance for the stock LF9009 ISL filter. This is only because I am removing the auto trans, and the associate auto trans cooler. This will free up a lot of room on the right side of the engine and frame rail...
