Yeah, that's called a quarter-elliptic/al suspension setup. Lots of old Class 8 desert racing trucks and rock-crawlers were built that way. There are better ways to do it, but it's an interesting way to bob a deuce. Assuming it's done well (not going to comment on that pic), I can't see anything...
In the spirit of using my new LDS multifuel to it's full potential, I want to equip Mah Deuce with the ultimate fuel system. I'm talking about being able to pour just about anything flammable right into the fuel tank, knowing that it will be processed and filtered before it reaches the engine...
Like the title says, I'm building an M109 motorhome conversion and I need to figure out what generator/s I'm going to use. Figured that I ought to look into mil-surplus stuff before I buy anything. Hoping I can explain a little bit about what I need, and then get some input about what I ought to...
No, this version will only work with the stock front/rear drive flanges. I wanted to make them fit locking hubs too, but I'm going to end up needing to make another version specifically for locking hubs. They're just too different. But I WILL be making them for locking hubs, whenever I get a set...
Whoa, I totally missed this. Sorry guys. To answer the original poster's question: I designed these to be used as steps. Just worked out that they ended up looking pretty cool. I only installed them on the back of my M109 to show that they fit the front AND rear axles. Pointless on Mah Deuce...
Ken, I LOVE hearing that. I put 4000 miles on Mah Deuce in the first year that I owned it. Almost finished going through the whole drivetrain. Just doing a light overhaul, but I'm getting ready to swap-in a brand new/rebuilt LDS (along with the turbo you ported for me). Running all Amsoil...
Tell me about it! I just changed all the fluids over to Amsoil. Planning on switching the engine oil over into the LDS when I swap that in. That would be some really expensive fuel.
Is the fuel compensator the only way that diesel can get into the oil? Just wondering if that potential problem is completely eliminated when the compensator is bypassed.
By the way, could one of the moderators please move this to the 'modification' forum? No reason we need to continue riling-up the purists and the guys who insist that these things are safe enough as-is...
Here are a few rough sketches to show you guys what I've been thinking about. Not really any more complicated than a rollcage that you might build for a Jeep. Just a little bigger tubing. If any of you want to download these CAD files to take a look at the 3D models, you can open/view them with...
You'd obviously need to use the front axle too, but there are a lot of benefits there (5-ton vs. 2.5-ton rockwells), and the 800-series did not have air brakes.
Same setup as the deuces, just bigger/longer/heavier. You could probably use the springs too, just need to tune them for the (lack of) weight. At that point, I'd want to just install the 5-ton axles along with the whole suspension and bogey...
I took some rough dimensions (old cab w/ softtop) and I'm working on some drawings to show you right now. There's not a whole lot of room to go with anything much bigger than 3" diameter tubing, so that's what I'm modeling with right now. I'm going to have to pay to have the tubing bent because...
No reason why you couldn't build an internal/external cage. I had to do that on my Tacoma (put the B-pillar outside/behind the cab) because there wasn't enough room inside the cab. But please-please-please think twice before building an all-external rollcage. Look at where you would run those...
You can increase the safety considerably by just building a nice internal cage. When I get my new cab back from sandblasting/paint, I've got to cut down the 900-series hardtop to fit the narrower deuce cab. Then I'll be ready to start planning/building the rollcage. This is all going to happen...
I don't understand what you're planning on doing with that radiator mount Unforgiven. Are you planning on mounting the radiator behind the cab? Why? This is the last rollcage I built. The rollcage in Mah Deuce is not going to be nearly as intrusive, but it WILL be better than nothing. Take a...
I will be using round tubing for everything except the floor-level support structure. Not planning on mounting the rollcage to the frame. Want to allow the cab to float on the stock mounts. Going to focus on making a safety-capsule in the cab. If the cab separates from the chassis, so be it. My...
