We used to wedge a small block of wood under each side of the back of the hood to allow hot air coming off the engine to hit the windshield from the front as opposed to the warm air from the defroster hitting it from the back. Unless it is super cold it works pretty good.

Some of the trailers have a pintle hitch attached to them but that is for moving the trailer around when it's detached from the MK-48. A five ton would pull it but it would not like it. Hooking a drive shaft from the rear diff on the 5 ton to the driveshaft on the trailer is a non-stater.

The 50 bucks covered removing a 500 pound tire/rim, breaking it down and replacing the O-ring and putting it back on the truck....did I mention it was about 98 degrees in the shade. As I said.....money well spent.

I'm doing this from memory so bear with me. The M916 I drove did not have a switch to engage the front axle....it was engaged when you engaged the power divider to lock the rear axles. Have you tried engaging the power divider and see if the front wheels pull? Or is that the issue?
