You know... Tripple Jim was reading my mind... I was just about to give GimpyRobb a shout out for having some of the best avatars on here, but you beat me to it! Now leave it alone for a while so we can enjoy it! As for the rusty fins you could probably get a lot of the loose flakey rust off...
One thing I've done several times was to use metal etching ( metal Prep ) acid (diluted per the instructions) and a whole bunch of screws, nuts bolts and other metal pieces. Throw it all into the tank about 1/4 full of liquid and shake it around vigorously. Dump it out and rinse or power wash...
So does anyone know what ever happened with SuperSecretSquirrel's machine? Looks like the thread ended 3 years ago with a replacement IP being on its way...
Did he ever get the generator up and running?
Not sure on a diesel, but I've seen cars with a small head gasket leak between the cylinders where the result was lowered compression due to pressure going back and forth between 2 adjacent cylinders. When you disassemble, look closely at the gasket and block/head surfaces for either damage or a...
I don't think I'd bother warming it up and rechecking. If everything on your gage is working correctly and compression really is 200 PSI, a little heat isn't going to get you into spec. Unfortunately it sounds like its time to pull it apart.
Wasn't there another member recently with low...
Good work guys!
I assume you will be getting a hard copy since it doesn't look like they have a PDF listed.
I don't know what the rules are for posting TM on this site, could it be scanned and posted here on SS in the generator TM section?
Or are there any copyright restrictions on these...
I too have extensively used the cheap H.F needle scaler as well as about 3 sets of replacement needles to date and it has held up pretty well, for a cheap tool made in who knows where. They work well on flakey paint and rust but like RedBeard said, it's best to get the heavy off with the needle...
Welcome Parrothead! Hopefully some of the fine members here will be able to help you identify what you have there, maybe a picture would help??
Once you identify it, maybe you can get a TM or service manual to get more detail as to how to prep it to attempt starting.
In general the things you...
Awesome! If you plan to do a lot of blasting, get yourself a pressure tank style blaster, way better than the siphon type for anything bigger than a football.
Whatever you decide to use for media, always sift it through a window screen so you don't get anything clogging your tip. I use a cheap...
If you can get access to a decent air compressor they make small hand sandblasters that are pretty much fertilizer sprayers with a different tip on them. They're great for doing small areas. Maybe you could grind/wire brush an area at a time, then blast off the remaining rust pits and spot prime...
Looks like CARC to me too. I've used several of the "Rust converters" in the past. They work a little, but there's no substitute for sandblasting. I've used POR-15 and Chassis Saver paints too, but it only lasted a couple years before the rust started coming through again and I needle scaled...
Right side looks like HEPG to me, if that would possibly stand for anything? Sometimes you can media blast steel and be able to read the image in the steel, but I don't think that will work in your case. It works very well where factory markings were put on bare steel with acid paint markers...
Fifty,
I do a good amount of plastic and urethane bumper painting on car parts. The process I use is to wipe down with SEM plastic prep cleaner, then use SEM "Scuff-n-Clean" with a red scotch brite pad, scour the plastic with the scuf pad dipped in the Scuff-n Clean compound. Wash with soap and...
SSDVC, Black beauty and Black Diamond are both coal slag products, great for blasting steel, but I'd say way too aggressive for aluminum. Also, be careful with both of them, they tend to have short "string like" pieces mixed in that easily clog your nozzle. Always sift it first. I would only use...
I've been doing bodywork and paint on antique vehicles for almost 30 years and here's my 2cents on rust patches.
Welding in patch panels isn't all that difficult but a couple pointers to help make it a lasting repair.... cut out any rot that you can and sandblast any remaining rust. Although it...
Are you sure those flea-bay pumps will work, the "demo" unit only has a lift of 8', I thought you had to go more like 18'? Not sure on the other one, the specs sound a little confusing. 5M suction 10M lift? I thought suction and lift both meant the same thing, but I'm no pump engineer  so...
Here's the direct read digital HZ/volt meter I used. Just 2 wires hooked to the OEM volt meter gives you volts and Hz. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gas-or-Diesel-Generator-Voltage-and-Frequency-Meter-/151153658052?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item233175c8c4#ht_2610wt_906
Guys, a word of advice on those e-bay digital meters, instead of the one Fletcher0780 pictured, locate a direct read one ( same price ) The one in Fletcher's picture uses an induction coil to read, some also require 12vDC input. Look for the one that is 90-300 VAC input, 40-70Hz, then just tie...
