Just read the whole Wikipedia article, and caught where the DUKW is the first vehicle on record to ever use a CTIS system allowing the wheels to be automatically inflated or deflated (like for running on soft beach sand); very cool!
I was big into wilderness canoeing and backpacking back around the time I enlisted, and I remember thinking to myself that all the military camping gear I would encounter would be state-of-the art stuff, and was real surprised when I learned the truth abut all that:

The Wikipedia article about them notes the original design limitation on the vehicle, so maybe they're being pressed beyond their limits from the get-go:

I did my basic training back in the stone age during a January and a February in Chicago (at Great Lakes). I hope I never know cold like that again.
I can't picture driving around that climate without a heater; sounds like waterboarding or something, only worse.
