Welcome to the club (wrecker owners). You'll have plenty of time as we head on into winter, to read the TM's and the many great threads on wreckers, which I always enjoy when someone refreshes a topic to something that has been forgotten.
If you come across posts from Ron (RIP)[**M819] - take...
The welding instructions for the collar "update" to tow bars, include Tempil sticks to ensure correct preheat to the weld zone of the parent material... and with you intending to gas weld - which takes a lot of time or heat to get the weld pool, I'd op for a ID/OD tube idea to clamp the jack leg...
Bruce - I get what you mean, but I think you actually were referring to 1/2000th.... ie., it's direct "Tons" and not pounds. ;-)
.. and I'd also go further to say that its a NATO standard going back to WWII, however, other countries don't use a C for "+ trailer" but have a plate with two...
I'd guess over 20K but you can go check current and historical sales on GovPlanet.
Looks like the 3 1/2" (sliding/tilting) fifth wheel has been swapped out for a 2" one and civi mudguards added too. Actually looks like a pretty neat addition.
Not sure if it was covered in the general fix up thread, but I know I had issues with mine - lot of front end accessories were mangled :-

I have most of the same gear (and a M816) but will eventually be making a stinger add on for my M916A1 with the ground spades etc. I have the cross tube but no ball/socket knuckle yet.
Echoing the above comments; M984s in private hands - I have only heard of a couple and no forecast of others...
Thought about a bypass filter? Some OTR guys are now well over 100 000 on same oil with one, only changing oil when sampling shows loss of base, fuel dilution, silica (dirt) or antifreeze contamination....
Welcome from the other side of the Atlantic (ExPat -25 years now!, living in upstate New York)
Just in case you didn't see the earlier post - there is a member over here looking for a Land Rover pintle hitch (NATO), perhaps you two can 'hook up' and somehow trade off!!! 'cause I know that if...
Look up ESMET (connector) with the search function - there is plenty of info and install tips from people who have 'been there before'.
While we are on the subject - have you considered changing out the fluted drum to allow a greater capacity of cable?
Been looking through TM section and not found parts list for M916A1.
Fuel water separator filter head/primer located by Freightliner dealer does not match. (Had a devil of a job searching ViN too - another story)
Mine has a diaphragm primer AND a piston plunger primer in the same casting...
Ground spades slid in from the rear, down the sides of the frame rails ........ a la WWII M1A1 Ward La France heavy wrecker.
Body ends capped off for bed containment ...... a la '70's Australian M816 med wreckers.
Anyone who has studied, nay, just 'noticed' features of military wreckers over...
I get the idea of a tilt bed, but that would mean adding more weight with a new subframe for the neck and hyd ram etc. Also be pretty precarious at 30 deg for self loading - have to add a load of traction to the deck!, or add a winch to the front.
As far as brakes - if towing with a pickup - I...
Exhaust brake on the Dodge engine so - no brakes on the trailer?
Beaver tail is nice. I also noticed the rub rails and added tie down straps. Very useful
There was a nasty push/shove vibration from mine going up through 15 - 20 mph and again at 25-30 mph. Seemed pretty ok at 45.
