Transfer Box & Air Shift x Sprag Operation

the answer to your question is the one choice you did not list.. D> All of the above !! .. And when on slippery road such as mud, ice, or snow, yes you will feel the front axle engage many times over and over , especially on a long slippery hill whenever you put your foot into the pedal...

M8 series Front Axle Not Pulling

I am sure you forgot that the poppet air is supposed to sound off only when shifting between reverse and neutral , and neutral to reverse .. Forward gear positions do nothing to the sprag poppet valve on top of the tranny ;) ... Neutral is where the poppet puts the sprag in forward position ...

M8 series Front Axle Not Pulling

you should never hear air from the poppet in any forward gear ... the poppet is activated between reverse and neutral only .. That is by design and on purpose. .. If anyone hears air leaking in any forward gear, there is a problem Houston

deuce accessory switch handle - weird shape?

yes there were/are reasons for it.. The major reason is the possible situation of hydrostatic lock in multifuels .. Crank that engine while providing fuel and if even just one cylinder has liquid trapped while the engine has firing power providing torque and momentum during cranking, you will...

deuce accessory switch handle - weird shape?

you guessed it, the weird lever is specific to the multifuel deuce and multifuel 5-ton .. Likewise, all gassers that were remotored with a multifuel were supposed to get their normal-looking accessory switch lever replaced to the "weird" style.. I do not remember Mack-powered A1's to have the...

deuce accessory switch handle - weird shape?

We who were actual military truck school students were taught during the 4-6 week MTOC (and subsequent TM's and PS Monthly articles) that the engine kill knob on multifuels is to always remain pulled out after shut down, transmission neutral, parking brake set and holding, wheels and trailer...

    The next Project an ASMH

I flunked kindergarten cuz I couldn't color within the lines .. First part of that sentence was fact-checked by snopes and found to be untrue, but the 2nd part is true

    Bad day for an M52A1

I will agree 100% the A1's were the best 5T made when it came to hauling loads in the hills, no dispute on that.. With A1's I have passed gassers and A2's on hills having a slow lane.. Most of that was also due to the widely-untaught method of using 5L and 4L, instead of dropping into the...

    The next Project an ASMH

good thing there wasn't much gas in the pan or heavy with fumes.. A pal of mine was an armored tracked vehicle mechanic and he sometimes borrowed one of the M62's from BN Maint .. One of them eventually developed a fuel issue so the shop had installed a shutoff valve ahead of the fuel pump ...

    so I think I want a tank

an M41 and the M551 can be transported by an M52/M818 without issue .. good luck affording the fuel for the tanks and maintenance, tools, parts, etc .. Availability of everything will be an issue, thus perhaps you will want something foreign and much newer

    The next Project an ASMH

I just want to add here for the sake of those lucky enough to get their carb or pump apart for cleaning and have gaskets that survived the process and look good.. Long ago i learned the hard way to NOT wait a week or a month to put them back together .. The used gaskets shrink as they dry out...

    The next Project an ASMH

yep they sure are .. and the filter screens are easy to flush , although time-consuming .. on my R6602's i removed the original fuel line from fuel pump to carb (only to preserve future replacement originality) and made a steel line that incorporates a fat 3/8" in-line NAPA see-thru...

    M818 throwout bearing failure (bigtime!)

You will likely want a high-temp sticky grease.. In a normal bench vice it was a piece of cake.. For the disassembly task, the vice should be holding only the forged slider assy, not the bearing case itself.. Never put clamping pressure on the bearing case, you don't want to distort anything...

    M818 throwout bearing failure (bigtime!)

Unfurled the NOS T/O bearing today to repack it on the advise of someone's post here on SS years ago.. Almost unbelievable that a good 1/3rd to half of it barely had any grease (left half in picture) .. The remaining grease was caked, almost dried out... Due to the amount of grease found on...

Wheres all the folks using antifreeze in their tires ?????

He has been using the windshield washer fluid for over 25 years but you are correct, certain alcohol's may affect rubber.. And as far as flammable, everyone could use a little excitement once in awhile .. Just ask us who own gasser M51's, M52's, and M62's which come with a fuel tank cap that...
