Essential Tools to have for an FMTV? Add your .02

If you are planning to change out broken grease fittings on the road; a tool to extract the remains of the broken one from the bushing, u-joint or whatever it is in might be helpful. "Easy outs" or the specialty tools form this that are sold in auto parts stores ought to do it.

M322 LT , Between Phoenix and Flagstaff.

Reference post 45: "Simply call a tire guy. . . " In case any of you pilgrims have not checked these 45/65R 22.5 tires new seem to price out at about $800.00 or depending on what brand etc. Plus the road service call to install it. You need one just to get off the site where the trailer is now...

Lotsa luck with this snowtrac: check posts 29 and 30 for pics and description of this vehicle. Nobody is going to get that out of where is is unless they buy a new tire or have the capability to get it on a landoll trailer or such. As this is written the trailer has been there for a week so it...

    Frame/hood number dates for M35

From about 1969 to 1972 the last two digits in the registration number identified the year of manufacture. Before and after that there was no relation between the numbers and date of manufacture. Some times when units got a bulk issue of new vehicles you could find them with consecutive...

    Cucv wrecker

No pics unfortunately, but in RVN the MPs had a 3/4 ton Dodge wrecker as they only towed jeeps. Do not know, but would speculate the Army bought a bare chassis and had someone install the wrecker body (a Holmes I think) on it. This was the only one I saw.

Reference is made to post 37: the usual grace period for an unattended vehicle is typically 4 hours. This one as of today has been there 5 days. I'm thinking the only reason for this is that is well off the road and the cops haven't found anybody who can remove it yet.

Attached is a pic of the sticker DPS applied to the trailer. It is dated 2/22/19 which is significant as DPS (state police here) typically tow and abandoned. This is from an e-mail I got from Trooper Lee in their PIO office (520-240-4426). I get the impression that there is some flexibility if...

Reference post 32: it certainly is. I of course did not pay attention to it when I was standing next to the vehicle but it issued by the Arizona Dept. of Public Safety. Owner or carrier should call them Monday to find out what the grace period is because I am sure the impound fee, towing and...

Photos taken at 1215H Sunday, 24 Feb 2019. Google Redburn Tire in Mesa, AZ if you want to find a tire. They deal in truck and equipment tires. They are about 25 miles from the trailer. I have used All Cities towing in the past but they are in Chandler which is on the south side of Phoenix and...

Took a ride and found your trailer on the northbound side of I 17 between mp 224 and 225 which is in the middle of the interchange with SR 74. I cannot imagine how anybody going from Yermo, CA to Ohio would be in that place. This is not going to be an easy recovery. Lunette is 21" above the...

    M35A2 roadside kit.

Think about a breaker bar, cheater pipe and a jackstand for if you get a flat. If the lug nuts have been on for a long time they can be difficult to stir unless you bring a 1" impact wrench too. Check out attached pic:

If the thing is abandoned on the shoulder of the road since Wednesday it is surely impounded and towed by now.

Where is this guy ? In a rest area or truck stop on I40?

Just for giggles Flagstaff AZ got 24" or so of snow Thursday and road conditions on I 17 north of Phoenix and on I 40 are ranging from very bad to shut down.

Wreckers: Do people buy them for hobby or use?

I bought a vise and the truck came with it. Not too good for lift towing without an under reach. Army has an add on to a fifth wheel tractor to provide an under reach capability. Holmes once sold the Army a fifth wheel sling wrecker with a 24 volt motor than plugged into the slave receptacle. If...

NW PA: Anybody willing to let me test drive an m35a2?

Survival skills with MVs include reading the reading. Do this first. TMs are available on this site and at flea markets. Do you know how to operate a military light switch ? Get an operators manual, organizational manual and a lubrication order. There are at least 37 grease points on a M35, 4 on...

Which 5 TON is the best option for a toy?

M 809 series have better power steering and seats than their predecessors and a more powerful engine which can be harder to start in cold weather. They are also at least 10 years newer. Brakes, rest of driveline and suspension are the same. Drove both M52 and 818 tractors in service and...

    Balancing Tires

When I had a big truck (which used tubeless radial tires) the tire shop had some form of powder in bags that they would put in when mounting the tires. With nmilitary tires I would put the break in the lock ring opposite the valve stem slot in the rim to help balance things and protect the valve...

    M123

The M123 and replacement M 911 did not have drum clutches on the winches which made it necessary to spool the cable out under power. This issue has been solved with the M1070 which has a dog clutch and an auxiliary winch with snatch block that is provided to deploy the cable.
