What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Good work! Hey, Brother, not trying to pick a nit here. However, I think we'd all feel a little better if you did not use a bottle jack for primary support while working under the beast. Please, use wood cribbing or a nice, hefty jack stand. We don't want to see any more statistics :shock...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

My 5 in. top stack came powder coated, but the coating started to let go. So, I had it sandblasted in addition to the heat shield (had a lot of old paint built up on it). I blacked out the whole system using a high temperature paint. That required removing everything all the way to the header...

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

I tucked mine up against the crossmember directly above the trunnion. I fabricated a special bracket out of some 1/4" steel angle then drilled and mounted the bracket to the crossmember. Both the R-12 service relay and the SR-7 spring brake modulating valve were bolted to the bracket just low...

    DOT air line fittings?

Yes, I have them all over my truck. I have only used the all brass types. All my brake system lines are DOT nylon and these fittings are much easier to work with. You will thank yourself for the transition. I would say say buy what you need with maybe a few extras. I get them from...

    Spare tire area ideas

I spec'd out the part numbers then measured my boxes. The 8758142 part number is the size you're looking for. It measures 30"L X 16H X 12W. I don't know why the TM list two separate part numbers. All the trucks appear to use the same size box.

Same dump/tractor tool boxes. Double stack them. These are older pics from my M818, but they are still there.

All 5-tons: Heavy Duty Torque Rod Ends

I took my truck out for a little street and freeway driving yesterday. You know, to celebrate Earth Day ;);) The ride characteristics appear to the same as with the standard ends. Really no change. Being a short wheel-based truck, it has always been a bouncer anyway. Luckily, in the past few...

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

Yeah!!! I called those rivets and backing plates every four letter word that man knows to exist!

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

The rivets are a good time, huh?! What only 30 more to go? Sorry, didn't mean to make light of the situation. But, been there, done that! Did you grind the heads off or burn them off? With the shape of the OEM backing plates, it was difficult to get an angle grinder in there to get a good...

All 5-tons: Heavy Duty Torque Rod Ends

Thanks for your input. I would like to see the failed one, if you wouldn't mind sharing. In your best estimate, how much actual weight was on the truck when it failed?

All 5-tons: Heavy Duty Torque Rod Ends

His distributor is local to me. I actually talked with them and was going to strike a deal directly. However, Erik is a good guy and conducts a fair and honest business. So, I ended up a cutting deal with him. I like supporting the small business owner. Must be like butter!

All 5-tons: Heavy Duty Torque Rod Ends

From what I understand, they are designed as an upgrade for the OEM and are not from another application. These torque rods appear very specific and unique to this type of suspension. I have spoken to Erik personally. He has told me his water truck customers use them and are satisfied with...

All 5-tons: Heavy Duty Torque Rod Ends

My 14 year old was helping me and one popped pretty good. He told he was going to change his drawers   I was a bit leery over the stock Harbor Freight arbor plates. I have heard explosive stories about those. I have replaced them with some nice upgrades. You need 12 total, eight...
