All 5-tons: Heavy Duty Torque Rod Ends

There was nothing wrong with the originals. It was my OCD again :-D. And, my push to make my truck safer for the civilian road. I recently replaced all the torque rods ends, again, no my M818. I replaced them with the "high-speed" heavy duty torque rod ends that are available through Erik's...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Installed a coolant filter. Flushed and refilled coolant system with Fleetguard ES Compleat Concentrate Anti-freeze/Coolant and distilled water. http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?166921-M809-series-Coolant-Fiter-Install&p=2001779#post2001779

    M809-series: Coolant Fiter Install

I decided to install a coolant filter on my M818. I had a heater which I never use out here in the South of California. I removed it lending to a vast amount of space on the right hand side of the engine compartment. I bought a Lubefiner LWHB4861 Coolant Filter Mounting Base. The forward...

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

Some rear brake plumbing shots using the same hose. That's an R-12 relay valve for the service side and an SR-7 spring brake modulating valve all mounted to the cross member centered above the trunnion.

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

3/8" SAE J1402A Air Brake Hose and its associated fittings. Simple to repair in the field. The fitting just off of the chambers is a swivel to avoid any binding or kinking of the hose during steering.

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

I put some protective coil around mine for safety's sake.

    Walker Auto & Truck Wrecking

I've always had good luck with Dave. He answered my calls and was always there when I showed up. I have bought big items from him, dropside bed, fuel tank, M939 front brakes and have always received sweet deals. I believe his son runs the eBay part of the business and I have always received...

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

Do you have the treadle valve firewall mounting plate? It makes the install much easier and reinforces the firewall. Mine came in the brake kit and I believe the kit was from SECO. http://www.secoaugusta.com/index.html

    "Rescued" M816 Wrecker

The Bendix manual for the QR1 valve indicates the valve should be mounted vertically with exhaust port down. I don't know if that makes a difference in performance or if that is to keep contaminants out. I used a an LQ4 proportioning valve on my front.

S-cam rears/wedge fronts? How much progress so far? Are you doing a write up of it in the forum?

    12R22.5 Tubeless Tires for M809-series

Not a fan of super singles. I wrestled some off an M931A1 in Hesperia, CA when I cannibalized it's front brakes. That chore reaffirmed my displeasure in them.

    12R22.5 Tubeless Tires for M809-series

Safety was the first reason I changed over, but this was the close runner up for me. I would have to add not messing with tubes and split rings too Exactly! Unless you got your bead-blaster near by.

    12R22.5 Tubeless Tires for M809-series

My son and I got the new tires mounted up on the rims. A much easier task than I had expected. I ended up using balancing beads for the two fronts. That size tire according to Counteract's website requires 12 oz. each. We spent this past Saturday afternoon finishing the mounting then...

    12R22.5 Tubeless Tires for M809-series

I have been running surplus G177 11.00R20 radials since August of '11. The date codes were 2004, so 12 years old. Great tires with lots of tread, but getting on years. I decided it was time to change them out. However, in doing so I wanted to simplify things and go with a more standard OTR tire...

Help with clutch! 5 ton M809 series

Maybe as simple as the wrong return spring on the clutch pedal arm. The clutch pedal is very forgiving on these trucks.
