Hurricane Advice: HMMWV will not move!

Yeah, kind of. I don't feel the engine load up, but I do feel the tranny shift. Guess I could disconnect the gearbox linkage and just manually move the lever on the gearbox and try it again. Hard to do while it is sitting on a fair incline. I don't want to overfill it. I got to figure a way of...

Hurricane Advice: HMMWV will not move!

Yes, the engine revs. No, I do not feel it load up. But I can definitely feel the tranny shift between N to D and N to R. That seems normal. But I did not want to go over 1500 RPM fearing I might break it worse. I should have stated that the M998 was flat bedded, not towed with the wheels on...

Hurricane Advice: HMMWV will not move!

Once again I need the advice of the collective as I might be seeing something HMMWV specific. Back in July, my batteries failed and I had to have the M998 towed home. Since the batteries were replaced, it has been sitting unmoved. Fast forward and now I wanted to make sure it was in shape to...

    prices

I have to agree! I vividly remember my first HMMWV part order. It was for a small spring. $1.35 for the small spring, and $25 for shipping aua in a 45 cent first class envelop.

    Advice Please: Planning 4L80 Conversion

Another followup question regarding the 4L80E conversion added to my list: Can anyone tell me what modification needs to happen on the fuel tank that does not have the X embossed on the bottom? Should I use Dexron 6 fluid in the 242 gearbox or GM Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid...

    Advice Please: Planning 4L80 Conversion

Another followup question regarding the 4L80E conversion. I have been told that I might need a different fuel tank to install the 4L80E? I have been told there are two different fuel tanks. The one that has an X embossed on the bottom is the one needed for the 4L80, and the other one without...

    Advice Please: Planning 4L80 Conversion

I would like to post more questions on the 4L80 conversion. I picked up that 4L80, along with the transmission cross-member, mount, 242 gearbox, and torque converter. The torque converter is really, really rusty. I can try to clean it up and paint it. I looked down the inside and it looks...

Interesting Response from Vermont DECLINING my HMMWV Registration

This is VERY similar to Florida. There is NOTHING in the law that prohibits registration. It is just the unelected bureaucrats decided to stop. When I spoke to a Florida DMV official, he stated he would pull back the plates for any HMMWV and I should rat on my friends and turn them in! Like the...

Interesting Response from Vermont DECLINING my HMMWV Registration

This is very interesting. I was successful last January with Vermont after a disgusting experience with the local Florida DMV. However, my M998 was a title transfer from Mississippi, so perhaps they considered road worthy? I also paid them the sales tax directly. I found them to be VERY easy...

    Advice Please: Planning 4L80 Conversion

Two very kind forum members spoke to me at length about this and shared a wealth of information. Both agreed that getting a 4L80 out of a HMMWV is best and get the 242 gear box mated to the transmission with all the cooling lines installed already. The way it was explained to me is there are...

    Advice Please: Planning 4L80 Conversion

I wanted to thank all the forum member that replied here and that kindly spent their time talking to me on the phone. Much good advice. The consensus was to only buy a 4L80E with the 242 gearbox out of a HMMWV and not one from some other GM application. I did a bit of searching and I found one...

    Advice Please: Planning 4L80 Conversion

Thanks for the info on the speedo - I did not know. ;) A lot of that is because I do not have a like-for-like core - that is like $900 alone. Then the controller is $1600. Shipping and taxes are like another $600. The tranny itself is like $2300 which is not terrible for a tested tranny.

    Advice Please: Planning 4L80 Conversion

I got a quote from a local drive train shop in Florida. Here is what they stated: They would supply a rebuilt 4L80e that is fully tested (y) They would supply a 1300-1600 Stall HD Torque Converter (y) They stated I should be able to use my current gear box. They stated I should buy the...

    Advice Please: Planning 4L80 Conversion

I would like to ask the collective advice on collecting parts to replace the 3 speed TH350 with a 4 speed 4L80(E?). I have a 1990 M998 with a 6.2, and TH350. I have done a lot of reading and actually I think I am more confused than before. I decided I want to buy the transmission and other...

Anyone Swapped This 6 Speed 4L80e

I am nothing close to being an expert so rely on the collective of experts here are they know their stuff. All I wanted to mention is that there is a sticky at the top of this forum regarding this subject: https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/lots-of-questions-about-4l80e-swaps.152874/ that has...

    Light switch mod for safety

Wanted this mod as part of making the M998 street legal, which included: adding reverse lights, license plate light, redoing all the lights that did not work, housings filled with mud, bad grounds, broken lenses, etc. Around here, they love to ticket for any reason. Bought one of the overpriced...

M998: Loud Pop when trying to start

I wanted to thank the forum members that guided me on this issue. You all saved me throwing parts at it, saving me lots of $ and aggravation. Much appreciated! It started right up with the two new batteries. In case this information is useful to someone in the future, while the Odyssey is...

M998: Loud Pop when trying to start

Thanks everyone for all the guidance. Last night, I took the one battery that blew the cap to the local Pep Boys that still has one of those "old school" Frankenstein battery testers. that sits on the floor and looks like it 100 years old. As I have seen it in action before, it made some nice...

M998: Loud Pop when trying to start

Thanks for all the tips. I plan on taking both batteries out to get them both tested. They don't have the date checked off on the stickers so I don't know for sure. They are the old Excide ones. I don't know if the prior owner changed them, or if those are the ones that came with it originally...
