Cheaper than a tow truck!!

So as I am driving to work this morning I stop to get some fuel. After finishing, i climb in the truck push the little red button and , click!, all the power goes out. WTF! So I climb out check the battery connections and, Click!. So I am pretty sure I have a bad starter. So instead of calling a tow truck and paying $150+ to get towed 1.5 miles to my house, I went and rented a dump truck for $60 to tow my broke deuce home. Good times here in Vegas!! Pics will come after work.

Having that TOW BAR made it all possible and paid for itself on that sigle use alone!

Good Job !

Bump or Pull starting a Deuce is a lot easier than wrestling with a tow bar. I once suffered a low battery problem when I was about to leave the cemetery where I worked. I was the last employee on the grounds.... So I waited for the next visitor with a pick-up (1/2 ton Ford) and we pull started it in a heartbeat. After that the guy with the pick-up and I became friends and he now also owns a Deuce (lives about 4 hours from here). Hehehehe.

We've got to get together sometime in the next month to hang out (BS) and/or maybe work on someones truck. I will be gone Feb-Mar, but my truck and towbar will still be here if needed.

You aren't kidding, I paid $600 for it 5 years ago and it has paid for itself many times over (especially when I had my M1009). Probably the smartest investment you can make when you own an MV.

Ok, so I replaced the solenoid today. Turned on he lever and heard the buzzer, all gauges were working, and I thought "sweet, it is fixed". Pushed the button and "clunk" dead again. So I took out the starter and will replace some wires and put a different starter on this weekend, hope it works.

after it went clunk, did the buzzing come back on? If the buzzing didn't come back on, me thinks that the problem would lie between the batteries/cables, and the rest of the truck. Of course, sometimes me thinks wrong!

Good follow up idea. if you go dead after pushing the button it could be battery connections, loose wires, etc. Let it sit for 5 minutes with the accessory switch off. That would be enough time for the firewall thermal fuse to reset. Then, turn it on and see if your buzzer starts working again. If it does, probably a short in the wiring. If not, then might just be dead batteries/cables. Do you have a nato slave cable set? Have silverstate come on over with his truck and see if it starts off his truck. Or take a look at charging the batteries up one at a time with a 12v charger. If you have one dead battery, it might do what you are seeing. Enough juice to run the buzzer, but when you want starter amperage, poof. In any case, before you get to removing that pretty heavy starter, might be worth a check? btw, that was brilliant getting the dump truck to tow yourself. Check out hagerty insurance and get their tow policy! cheap and easy. Good luck!

WOW. I just got an online quote from Haggerty with guaranteed value at $15000 on my M35A3 including towing and it's less than State Farm( I'm sure not valued that high and no towing! Thanks for the suggestion BAdMastard! (quote was $484 a year.)

A little troubleshooting and diagnostics, in a methodical manner, will save you a ton of time and money. Think of how current flows, where it goes. and check from point to point.
Badmastard had some great ideas, not sure on the short though. A short, is a "shorted circuit" which in most vehicles means shorted to ground. Can be shorted to power but less common. When shorted to ground it usually is noticeable, smell of buring wire , blown fuses, triped breakers, etc.
Like Badmastard said, Sounds more like a voltage drop...either by dead/weak batteries or a bad connection, bad connection causes increased resistence and votage drop. And i have seen what he said about one battery being bad.
Good luck. Hope you get it fixed with out spending to much.
