Question for you: Looking at it with the "wrecker eye", are those shackles at the same spacing as they were on the frame? And is the steel around it (the bumper extensions) beefy enough to support the truck on the hooks ? Don't know what made me think about that, but I am guessing you already took that into consideration...
I think shose shackles could be removed and you could weld up a cow catcher like the old steam trains
Or a Mad Max special edition extended bumper!

Hoping your truck never has to hang on a hook - but I figured it was worth asking.
The other thing I chewed on yesterday was that I don't think I have seen any MV's hauled with the rear axle in the air. Definitely understand why tandems or tri-axles aren't but what about it? Could that be done with the M1078?
Yes as far as i know all the big wreckers tri axles all have a stinger that comes out of the bottom of the wrecker and slides right under the steer axle with saddles on each side and they wrap a chain over the axle to keep the towed vehicle from jumping out of the saddles if the tow truck hit some kind of big bump or worse and then they either drop the drive shaft or pop the axles out to avoid the transmission from turning while engine not running . So i guess you could tow a 1078 backwards but you would have to tie the steering wheel off but most wrecker operators would tie to the front and pop the axles out

It took me forever to get the lift parts for a 5-Ton on the stinger boom under the M1089. Took a bit of digging to find the Grove Crane outrigger pads too, but that finally happened. Those parts were almost what a lot of the guys call "Unobtanium" around here. I can only imagine what it might take to be able to attach the wheels into a slip-in like a Civy wrecker. Then again too, might be that my local tow operator can look at it and tell me what to get from where....

Looking good. What do you think of the mini split? Are you running it off of a battery bank or generator?
Im running off of shore power since it was first fired up . While i was waiting for AC man to come vacume it and power it up i sat down and made up a 50ft 10/3 s o cable so depending on where i might find my self if i can find a 110 outlet i just plug it into my 110 outlet in the garage on the truck where the outside unit is and back feed my panel so i can keep ac and refrigerator powered without pulling my house batteries down or running my generator or inverter ! And so far i havent seen anything i like better for ac and at max draw is 15 amp so it will be no problem to power with generator or inverter and its an absolute igloo inside the camper on a 103 heat index day with 0 noise inside or out i chose to go 115v 12 k (1 ton ) unit so i could power it with one of the suitcase sise quite generator instead of my 220 kubota diesel genset that is louder ! If i need 220v for welder or everything needs to run at the same time is what its for . My big thing is to run silent as possible just for stealth !

And quiet is good. That way when you sneak off across the hill and wait - you can here them walking through the leaves. I almost wonder it that wouldn't be a better plan for my shelter than the rooftop that I have now.
'Course I haven't hooked up anything else electrical in it yet either.
Might should put one of those splits in my Container to keep those contents cool too. Guess I should do the math and see how many cubes I have to determine sizing. COLD is one of my favorite things, so yeah. Might be one in my near future.
If your talking about the one on your 989a1 im saying 4 to 500 sq ft and i dont know how its insulated but i would do the 12k 115v so you can plug up anywhere you go on 110

Standard insulation. Seems to be factory insulated with some sort of foam that is possibly poured between the inside and outside walls. I am with you. 110v is the way to go when possible for being functional in more places. Any idea what the wattage draw is for the unit you have?
mine is 15 amp max it says in the tech manual and i would say thats when its in hyperheat if you want it real toasty on super cold days look at the MR COOL HYPERHEAT they claim it will get much warmer than reg heat pump and heat at much colder conditions than reg mini splits . If it heats like it cools its gona be what the doctor orderd !

I've been drawing up a few concepts from receivers, to bolt-on's using the OEM shackle points, to full frame extensions. I sort of want to have the ability to mount fore or aft.
And am I not seeing which winch you settled on.

It will bolt up on both ends of the truck the 4 bolts cost 60 bucks lol it almost got welded on but i did want to be able to take it off if needed and the wibch is just a smittybuilt 12v 17,500 lb i fugure im atleast going to use 1 snatch block just to get all the cable off the drum so 35,000 lb pull will get me out or a yellow piece of equipment will ! The tray is 1/2 inch plate.

I wanted to get a bigger winch but this thing fell in my lap for 400 bucks new in the box so for now it will do.

Sounds like a good price to me.
Thing is, you have been driving for enough years to know when to stop. You won't be buried up to the axles before you stop digging a hole - so I think it will be plenty of winch. The winch between the steering wheel and the seat will do more work than the one on the front bumper IMHO.
I have never quite been able to understand how some of these trucks get as deep in the slop as they do
