Basic paint prep and tons of sanding to include heavy degreaser and using a hot pressure wash. Paint and primer are single stage urethane that use catalyst and reducers then shot through a cheap Lowes HVLP gun.Looks great! What was your process? Rattle cans or what? Not much to it, it’s all in the prep. If you see something questionable, fix it and don’t get in a hurry when spraying, it might take several applications to avoid runs. You got this!Thanks for info. Looks really good. Hope mine turns out that well.

Thats a lot like mine it's a 91 that they redid in 2012. Even has the tag like yours on it. Makes me wonder at a certain point say 20 years old if they undergo a upgrade or get rid of kind a deal.I just noticed this tag when looking at other MWV’s. This is a 1987 M998 (I may have the year of manufacture wrong) that went through the program in 2009 and was then given the M1097R1 model. They call it a 1987 M1097R1.
If you're asking if it is normal to have play in the pinion (input) shaft to the differential the answer is no, those bearings are supposed to have a preload, read they should be tight.I have a M1097R1 I just purchased...I know by the designation it is a recapped Hmmwv with a 6.5 Litre. Engine. My question is simple here because I am old school military and a Military truck collector as shown by my pic. When I put the truck in drive it runs great. but when I put the truck in reverse I hear a clunk from the rear differential then it goes away. I climbed under the truck and checked for loose transmission mounts, rear axle being loose and U joints check and all check out ok. When I drive the truck there is no vibration or winning sounds at all. The only thing I notice is I can turn the rear drive shaft and somewhat create the same sound in the rear differential. The rear shaft move a short distance then connects with spider gear in differential. How tight should this tolerance be? Is this normal for these trucks or am I looking at a future problem? Thanks for any advice.

I live outside of town and speed limit is 55 to go anywhere and the 3 speed sucks at over 45 as you all know. Will just swapping to a 4 speed help much for my commute to town or should I just get used to it?View attachment 934357

I dunno, my M1097R1 will go 65MPH all day & it's a 3spd. Had it pointing all the way down at one point, I think 72mph. Yeah, it's revved. I'll get a 4 speed truck for driving around more........and the 3 speed sucks at over 45 as you all know.
I thought I was doing 65 until I installed a GPS unit in mine. My gauge is off by about 7 mph. When I get mine to 60 it’s rough. Took it from Wilson County to Ft. Sam Houston and back in the interstate. Who needs an A/C kit with no doors and the back rolled up going 65mph?!
