Having adds you can scroll past on the margins is one thing, but the popup adds and fake add lure buttons(big button labeled “next” with an arrow) Imbedded in discussions are starting to get distracting and tiresome…
I guess that happens in every other forum, as well (?) Not here, if you upgraded your account...

The site is funded primarily from advertisements. I am not privy to the finance side of things here completely when it comes to the major advertisers. But I can say that there are currently 457 supporting members of you here out of 100K+. Also, I know that hosting the website containing the amount of data we have here isn't cheap. (There's over 300Gb here) Then there's the software side of things. From the things I know, that's a break even at best.

No need to turn it into a guilt trip. I have messaged him to see if I can get some screenshots. I will see what I can do. They won't be gone for normal members/visitors. But if there's something simply offensive/intrusive I'll see about removing it.

@patracy i cannot attach pics in messenger, so will post them here.

Not gonna make me feel guilty. People don't come to forums for the advertisements, they come to find information and get questions answered, and I do a fair bit of that… For free I might add… probably have even helped professionals here servicing their customers… I don’t care, I like helping people, its good Karma, and it is often a good mental troubleshooting exercise which I enjoy.

Banner adds(the ones you can scroll past) and require no interaction have always been with us. Usually top and bottom of each page of postings and don’t bother me in the slightest..

It is the ones that require your interaction to proceed, that annoy me, as they expend my time to no positive end. They are distracting…

The one that got me annoyed this morning was a lure, an obvious deception used by some to up their add click count by getting users to click on it, thinking it is a functional button in the forum, that will move them along the discussion path of the thread, instead it drags them to an entirely different site… Not a fan…

It was small, smaller than the CSM tire banner at the top of every page but all it said was “NEXT“ with an arrow. It was in the electric hydraulic pump discussion after Ohiobenz’s recent pic. Unfortunately I have yet to find another instance, but I suspect I will. When I do I will add an actual screenshot Or see whos site it goes to… Today was the first time I have seen this tactic on this forum…

it looked a lot like this though:

Then there are the ones that popup while shifting between pages or proceeding to the messenger application, and require interaction to proceed: Got one of these getting to Patracys message. These started in the past two weeks or so.

And then there is the bottom bar that shifts up to block the lower ~15% of the screen. You can collapse it with the small arrow provided, that drops it down to 1-2% of the screen, and of course if you miss the button it will often click on the add, taking you away from the forum entirely… These also are a fairly recent addition…

I have been a moderator and an admin on a few forums over the years, and one thing that may be going on is the people providing the forum engine and web space may have made changes to how the engine operates to pad THEIR bottom line, and not the forum owners. Clicks = cash, doesn’t matter how those clicks come to pass…

My .02…

The ads are placed there by me. Well the space is granted for it by me. Previously the google ads were displayed at the top of the page and bottom of the page. But google shifted to an optimized system. The hosting is done by another company, they're just providing a linux server for us to run the forum software, database, and webserver on.

I can say that the ads will remain at least in the spots they were for non paying members/visitors. But I'll investigate a means to prevent the total screen grab ads and see if I can also nerf the scroll up ones. Those are certainly impacting use.

For the amount of hassle and money this forum and its members have saved me, the small contribution to the guys who run it is an absolute no brainer. I struggle to think of better ROI.

I also can't stand the ads either, and when they recently re-appeared, it was a visual reminder that my subscription ran out.

I, too, am shocked that only 457 out of 100K members are contributing. I get that some come and go, and free is definitely one of my favorite words, but it's really a pretty easy thing for me to justify.

It's also been a great way to "meet" some people around the country (and just around the block) with our common affliction. Thank you to the people who put this forum together and keep it running.

I think the Knowledge and help I have received and that is available here is well worth the small price to support it . If we fail to support the site we could lose it. I have tried to support other members with the limited mental and physical resources I have. Kudos to those that run and moderate this site.

I guess that makes us the 4.58 %s THE CHOSEN FEW !!!! Ive got an idea lets start a porn thread that you have to be a paying member to see (our paid membership will skyrocket) and @Guyfang can load new pictures of german girls in there once a month from his trips to the local sporting house /billiard parlor and we can sale pop up adds to them so people wont mind the pop up adds and the website will have plenty of fresh capital to expand our great site ! Just an idea i have them all the time ! OK OK MAYBE JUST GIRLS IN CAMO BIKINIS ! Ive seen the pictures of Guyfangs trips to see his sporting girls they all look like him but in drag and no one wants to see that kind of thing !
