so just for giggles i went out to look at the wiring some more, disconnected drivers side alternator and insulated all of the cable ends and secured to the harness with a zip tie, the truck now charges at 15.5 volts and the starter and everything functions as it should, once it gets warmer i will dig out the starter to verify its 12v or 24v but i can at least go around this hurdle for now and continue working on the rest of the truck, im sure this will be revisited in the future but we shall see

i did choose to leave the alternator in place for now just to see if i need to get it hooked back up itll be a little easier for me to get it hooked right back up

well took it out for a shakedown and i was hearing a belt squeal after a few miles. pulled it over and cut the passenger side belt off as it was warm to the touch and well its not doing anything with the wiring disconnected, continued on my journey and started to hear it again. once i got it home i checked charging voltage still sitting at 15.5v at the batts with the truck running...

do you think the additional load to the old alt (that was charging only 10v before) is too much for it? this is a non isolated grounded 27si alternator... probably going to pull it bring it in and have it tested. may have them both tested

Definitely a step in the right direction, but 15.5 Volts is just shy of the 15.6 that is "rapid charge" for an Optima. You may want to play around with the system until you get the voltage down to 15.0.
Then again, those poor Optimas may take a while to recuperate from the extreme overcharging they've been subjected to. Your alternator probably won't have to do much work for a while.

shes down waiting on a new alt, bearings are fried. i have a new 12v civi alt on its way i will pick it and some new belts up tomorrow and throw them in see if that resolves the issue

both of them had bad bearings screamed on the test, dont know how i didnt hear it before when the truck was running dual alts... stay tuned for an update tomorrow after work

Please don't dispose of the isolated ground alternators if you have them. Folks are always searching for rebuildable cores.

So to be fair my 15.5v reading may have been wrong the pass alt reads 14.1 on the machine at 2 parts stores and my multimeter is a really cheap harbor freight multimeter gets me in the ballpark anyway

Got the new alternator installed and a new belt well turns out the belt is ever so slightly too long full adjustment on the alternative and it squeals like a bad belt. Back to the parts house for a slightly shorter v belt... anyone know about upgrading to a serpentine belt?

I was wondering about that possibility. I've got maybe eight of those really cheap HF meters, and they all seem to be accurate - and one which was dead on arrival. Can't whine too much when they're free with a coupon, which is how I get them.

I can't complain got mine for free, though about bringing my Viava one expert meter from work but figure I shouldn't use a $3000 meter for testing voltages on my old beast I'd love to explain that to my vp

Well, it's not like you're diminishing its lifespan, or wearing it out that way.....

BUT, it is the property of the company; so likely best to play it safe:

No doubt... well got the newer new belt installed and I think I got it tight enough but it started squealing a bit as well... I wonder what the issue is, how tight does that belt need to be? Torqued on the alternative with a pry bar and cranked the bolt down... was fine around the block then pulling back in squeak squeak squeak

Oh and one interesting development, after reattaching the new alternator and cleaning up the connections there my seat belt buzzer just started working... didn't even know it was still installed lol

do you really know me or what, i hate those ****ing things! but i will say there is 2 old nests above the drivers headlight... i need to get those cleaned out. there was also 2 in the drivers door jam outside of the weather seal... god i hate those bastards....

you know i swear they put those things on earth just to mess with humans, did you know they have a venom that effects humans worse than any other creature, and they dont create anything worth a thing... what are they really for if not to mess with me, in the phone company we have these pole mounted terminals (20' in the air mind you) of course the designers made them black so they attract heat and you know what wasps love more than anything? HEAT like why in the **** did they make them black jeebus Okay :Soapbox: rant over

I'm in complete agreement with you, for once. The first year I hit a yellow jacket (the ground dwelling ones) nest with the weed whacker I looked like the Michelin man for a few weeks afterwards. Learned that one could either become immune, or get allergic, as a result.
The next year, after hitting another nest with the weed whacker, I found out that I got allergic. After that I had to carry an epipen...and decided to let a hired crew clear the weeds from then on.
And for what it's worth, wasps like gray colored phone terminal boxes, too. You'll never guess how I know.
