Now, there are several problems with this, as things stand. Feel free to correct me:

1) the winch just isn't powerful enough to pull out deuce

and

2) the way it operates in front of the truck, you'd probably kill yourself if it did - not sure if you can fully use the winch from inside the truck, I suppose you can, but it's still a bit tricky.

So, what do people think of an emergency electric winch? Electric winches often have a long cool down, rated to be used to haul something like 10T or more. And have cab controls. I'm picturing something that can be removed and stored, and only brought out when you actually get stuck.

Is the area where the current winch is located (for those that have one) a suitable place for something like this, or would the structure need to be shored up or another location used? Maybe create attachment points directed to the frame and store the cable to make this connection to the winch?

The stock winch is strong enough to suck the truck up into a tree.

Learn how to operate it right and you'll have no danger.

Get yourself a good 20K chain with 2 hooks, a snatch block, and leather gloves. US made only!

You may have to slog thru 3 foot mud to hook it to something stout enough for a pull, but that is part of the charm of off-roading.

As noted in posts 4&5, a snatch block is your friend. A truck with a winch is authorized 1ea snatchblock with a sheave compatible with the size cable used on the winch it goes with. Plus a utility chain and a hammer and punch to change out broken shear pins. A second snatchblock is an asset. If working alone, try to arrange the pull so the cable leads straight onto the capstan otherwise the cable will get jammed on the end of the capstan. Naturally you would also be carrying several of the authorized shearpins for your winch. The problem in most field winching evolutions is not that the winch is too weak, but you don't have a bomb proof anchor point in the right place to work with.

You operate the winch from in the cab.

It should be a 2 person operation.

Another interesting design with the deuce winch. If the PTO is in low gear and the truck trans and transfer case are in low, the winch speed equals the truck speed. Pretty neat.
Just curious if it would still hold true with a larger size tire, or if it would still be negligible? In Example like my truck that went from the 9x20 to the 395’s would the larger diameter tires change the ratio enough to cause a issue like overrunning the winch speed or would it still be within the margin to work effectively. I’ve never tried on mine. Just a thought that passed through my head.

It is somewhat disconcerting when people have to ask how their equipment might work, Or is capable.
When competent and understanding of the operation of any accessory the question would not arise.
NOT knowing or understanding how to operate equipment is a recipe for disaster.
Some of the equipment we have at our disposal, Is old, and perhaps lacking servicing.
To my mind, owning an ex military piece of equipment necessitates READING and understanding the correct use of it.
Complete knowledgeable of the use of it then inspires confidence, and SAFE operation.
Harsh?...

I guess I just don't know enough about winches. I took the 5t rating of our winches quite literally. My truck weighs around 7t now (modifications) and when I'm done with it, I expect it'll weight over 8 maybe 9. Why is the winch rated at 5t if it could haul even the stock truck up a tree?

I have operated the winch, with a friend, to haul trees out of woods. If I was alone, I can only imagine it would be a little tricky using. My goal here isn't to replace the truck winch but supplement it in an emergency.

Getting stuck isn't always in the ideal position to haul yourself out. I thought adding attach points the frame would allow me to pull the truck in most any direction - it might be awkward in some cases with our winch located on the front bumper.

There are no stupid questions.

Questions that are not asked will not make you smarter.

I do know for sure that reading those incredibly dry and sometimes hard to comprehend TM's are tough.
THE PART THAT NOBODY seems to remember - who says Read the TM - is that they went to school.

Military drivers and operators of equipment were taught. Most of us were trained to do something for Uncle at some point in time. Those Instructors talked for hours. They showed film for hours. They gave us books and they tested us. And then there was practical application with an experienced instructor / operator who was watching over you and "his" truck. Your first time just sitting in the vehicle and cranking it was supervised.

montaillou , Don't hesitate, ASK for help.

The guys are right that you should know your equipment - but the only way that can happen is by reading and asking questions. Unless you have a magic wand there is no other way. BE SURE to BE SAFE

It's close enough. Wraps left on the drum, tire size etc will have an effect although negligible.

The Garwood winch on the front of the M35 series is in fact a 10,000 lbs winch. When combined with a single pulley snatch block, the capacity of the winch is doubled giving you a 20,000 lbs winch. Adding additional, or multiple pulley snatch blocks will increase you capacity.

Here is a link to the Operators manual for your truck. Page 112 (4-58) covers how to use the winch on your truck. Youtube also has good videos on winch basics as well.

Perhaps prompt you to read in detail your vehicles operating modes, so that you can Enjoy using it to the fullness of it's capabilities.
I have seen far too many squad'ies ,( And one is too many ), British and American squad'ies badly hurt ( And Worse ), by not being familiar with their equipment and using it properly.

The reply had unintended consequences. When I read it, I read if you don't know your truck inside out, you shouldn't have one. Reminded me of other times in my life when people have said, if you don't get it the first time, quit. It's also reminded me of other times on this board when people have told me I shouldn't consider doing something. I'm also reminded of talks I've had with others in this hobby who feel intimidated not to ask questions for fear of looking foolish.

Did you read the title of this thread? Spitballing is defined as throwing out (a suggestion) for discussion.

The scenario in my mind is that I'm driving somewhere miles from civilization and find myself stuck. I'm usually alone in these scenarios because if I had to rely on others to have fun, I wouldn't have nearly as much as I do. I have a sat phone, and if I want to pay, maybe $1000's I can get anyone to do anything, but maybe there's a cheaper way. Our winch is on the front, there are controls on it, and in the cab. Life doesn't always play nice and put the best angle to attach a winch line to in the best place. Maybe the best way to get out, maybe the only way, is to drag the truck sideways, backwards.

This discussion is a sounding board for me. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of welding 4 attachments to the frame, using a 12v electric winch with a remote so I can be right there, safely, and see what's going on.

I wrote that into SS a while back, I wonder now where I got that at. Can't remember if it had to do with snatch blocks or not. I also remember the one that says to open the hood also on a pull so when cable lets go one doesn't get killed.
