Locked Military padlocks

I went to pick up a Deuce for a friend of mine recently and when I got to the ARNG facility where the truck was (a small local unit, not a big base), I hooked up the towbar and chains and when I went to put the transfer in neutral I found the steering wheel padlocked with the typical big chain.

Asking the Sgt. who was in charge if they had a master key netted the following response:

", we lost that key 4 or 5 years ago".

I've got 5 trucks and several lockable trailers. Each truck has at least one tool box and steering wheel chain (the M818 has two tool boxes), and I'm thinking of making the battery boxes lockable so I can use a battery terminal switch. That's too many keys to keep track of, so I use the combination Masterlocks that you can set the combination. All my locks have the same 4-diget combination that I can change anytime I want. I think I got the locks at home depot in 3-packs.

i have a way to get them open and rekey them, i wish i could find a bunch more of them, i currently have about 4 or 5, all keyed alike, and used on all of my stuff, the steering wheel chain, tool box, motorcycles, and deuce fuel cap lock.....

There is a locksmith outside Ft Hood who redoes them, cut or not. You give him like 5 cut locks, he gives you 2 good ones with keys. No idea on contact info.

Look on YouTube for "5200 lock" and you will find a video on "slipping", it's away to use a shim to get into the lock via the hasp, once in they can be re-keyed. As for the cut locks with keys, you can take the tumbler out and install it in other locks so they can all be keyed the same. When the lock is open look in from the top, that screw inside is what retains the tumbler. again YouTube shows how.

I take a 42" long set of bolt cutters on pick up thrips. Works like a charm.

slipping will work on some locks, but not all, some have double ball hasps, and the balls are locked into place with another part which rotates them into the hasp groove

ps, I have a couple federal 100G locks that have the hasps cut off, but have not messed with them yet

Thats what I use. Ive already got to many keys to drag around as it its.

Its nice to be able to open a tool box without having to track down the keys.

I've actually snapped 5200 series with a BII Screwdriver and a adjustable wrench.. they are not that tough

it takes some technique, but was much simpler then signing for the "master key" from the motor pool or security.

no doubt - bolt cutters are way too hard to keep track of and store. grab an adjustable wrench and another around a 3/4" in size and they pry open w/ extremely little effort. or two around 3/4" in size.

btw, i used to order the 5200s in the packs of 10 w/ like-keying, so all the trucks/boxes/vans/etc. in my section were only one of 3 keys. i plan to do the same again - haven't looked into cost, but having one key that opens up all the locks on one vehicle is priceless.

I have five American Lock Company pad locks, three 700 series of which one is a long shackle and two 5260 series locks all keyed alike.

What are they worth?

I changed over to Medeco high security locks with the cross cut tumblers.

I get em for 15 each new....... thats for the gold colored 5200 series with a chain, not counting shipping, the 5260 is a shiny silver finish and can be had locally for 26 dollars, no chain

keyed alike is an extra buck or so per lock

These are silver.

Like I said I also have the three 700 series locks that are all keyed alike.

Never gave much thought to selling them.

i am not sure what the 700 series go for, i think they are a better lock as in 2 more tumblers that the 5200 series.....

Slipping works on a 5200 according to the video. 5200 w/chain sell for $12 in new condition in the surplus stores in Killeen, I don't recall if they have any keyed alike.

i just tried slipping a couple of mine, not working.....

also, on one of the vids a guy took one apart and mentioned the smooth pins, top and bottom, mine all have serrations, maybee i have the later models, the serrations make it a pain to get the barrels apart after removing them from the lock housing

i always slip the lock barrel once removed from the lock body when i do not have a key

At one point I had about 50 A5200GL locks. They went quite fast. I should have bought much more when I had the chance!

Well I guess you can't believe everything in the internet (SHOCKING ) That actually makes me feel a bit better about using them to secure my trucks, I was disappointed that they were so easy to defeat
