Just to update, my friend got his title and historic plates in the mail yesterday. He went through a title agency, about $300 and no hassles. Took about a month. He has a ‘66 M35A2.

You do not need commercial reg before applying for historic. I took in a SF97 on a M35A3 and M931A2 and received historic reg. No weight cert required.

He didn’t either, at first they wanted that but they didn’t need it after all.

I'm looking at getting my first 5ton this weekend and I'll see how the DMV thing goes if it doesn't go well I'll go to Nevada and register it from my friends house up there. I'll let you all know how it goes as soon as I do it

I've had my M818 registered Historic for nearly 9 years now. I did VIN verify (REG 31) through AAA myself, then Historic plates were obtained through a titling/registration service. No issues.
