oil cooler drain?

TM 9-2815-210-34P shows just a pipe plug. Anyone know why this stopcock was installed?

They installed valves so that oil samples could be taken.

I thought that was a vent for the coolant side of the cooler not the oil side , my cooler may be ok after all.

Looks like we got two Generals that need to return to boot camp.

The military does not change oil every "X" number of miles or hours. They pull a sample of oil using the drain that you pictured, and send it off to be analyzed. If the lab determines that the oil needs to be changed then they will send a memo down to the maintenance company to change the oil in that truck/ vehicle.

Yup, It also tells us if there is something wrong in the motor by detecting contaminants. I wish I had a $1 for every AOAP sample i've taken in my career so far, lol.

Hey, I hope that cooler is ok, all I will need to do is push in a couple of freeze plugs and I can make the 80 mile trip to pick up my M127 flat bed.
