The most important vehicle that shoved it in the Russians face on a daily bases during the Cold War was the Berlin Duty train that ran daily from Frankfurt and Berlin with the US flag flying strong while passing through Russian check points in DDR.

I was the US Forces Europe Rail Operations Chief from 1986 - 1990.

When I was a young Specialist trying to get promoted I took the all of the railroad correspondence courses offered by the Transportation Corp. It taught me a lot about military railroading and I maxed out on promption points for correspondence courses.

Fort Eustis, Va used to have an extensive railroad network and a lot of rolling stock up there....I attended my Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course (BNOC) up there.

I just got word from defrocked SS member Freighttrain that a live steam locomotive will be passing near me. It will be traveling from Chattanooga to Birmingham tomorrow and I intend to get some pictures as it screams through Collinsville, AL.

I'll post them tomorrow.

I'd love to put some pictures/videos of some of thoser SP toilets, but the mods would think it was to discusting, any pull the thread, then UPRR management would do their typical thing. If I am gone, waite for the you tube video to come out when I am fired or retired. You really need to be a STEEL SOLDIER to enter one of them. Range toilets smell better. At least at a range, you have the tree option. I wont even talk about hauling a nuclear reactor of really screwed bridges that the railroad wrapped with chains, to keep the thing together.

Try being one of the poor guys that has to clean that mess. Me laborer Tulsa Diesal Shop:?

I was stationed at FT. Eustis, VA in 1987- 1988, as a member 7th Transportation group. They had 2 US Army locomotives. Phonetically speaking, it was spelled "F**k This, Even Uncle Sam Thinks It Sucks." However, I thought it was a really nice post. I would have re-up'd if I was going to stay there longer. It was the nicest base I was at in the military. They also had helicopter maintenance training there, too. If my memory serves me right.

Hey Ferro--

From poking around on Wikipedia, I see that the 80-tonners are powered by 470 HP Cumminses. Does each loco have dual prime-movers, each with it's own generator? I'm just curious as to how the center-cab layout works mechanically.

Possibly on the top five list of ugly engines of all time, built by both EMD and ALCO to military specifications. Low hoods for tunnel clearance and dual gauge capability...yes dual gauge! Hollow adjustable axles and truck frames as I remember on friction bearings, true cold war artifacts. Some can still be found operating around the country....at 56 1/2 inches. ;-)

I started out as a hostler attendant/fueler in the diesel shop in Albina (Portland) Oregon, in the early '70s. You have my deepest sympathy and understanding. It appears that maybe there really is a mech. dept. employee that actually services the cabs anymore, despite the unsavory side of the job. Reviewing the quote in your message, especially the part about the bridge, it doesn't surprise me. I was handling a military train westbound from Milford, Utah to Las Vegas in the latter '80s. In the back third of the train, there was what I believe they called a Combat Engineers Vehicle-an M60 tank with a short barreled gun and a crane on the turret. The turret turned sideways, and the crane ripped a chunk the size of a basketball out of the main vertical spar of a truss bridge at Galt, Nevada. Apparantly, that straightened the turret, for a while. The turret went sideways again two stations east of Vegas, and ripped the block signal at the east end of Dike completely out of the ground, and then did the same thing to the east signal at Wann, which is the closest siding to Vegas. The train following us reported the missing signals. The guys on my caboose never noticed a thing. Some weeks later, while at Mannix, Ca. waiting for the army to load their equipment from Ft. Irwin onto my train, I mentioned this incident to a U.P. carman who was there. He said that he knew all about it, and pointed to the CEV that had done the deed. IDed it by serial number. The only evidence of its involvement was what appeared to be a handhold on the end of the crane was smashed, and the roughed up paint! Pagan

Wow cleaning the dungeons of sd40s in the 70s with no air maybe I shouldn't complain. lol We have a few old emds as yard switchers and hump engines. Alot of the consists come in and you know they only clean the leader and motors from other roads are usually the worst. Sure glad their removing toilets on some yard stuff to put in the remote control equipment.
