Stuck in reverse

This thread is about the transmission issue I'm having with a winch deuce I recovered from Knox yesterday. The other thread is about the recovery but this one is strictly about the technical issue I'm having with the transmission.

What happened is, the truck will only drive backwards. The shift lever feels like it is in neutral, but if I let off the clutch the truck drives in reverse. I can't move the shift lever over to the left side where 1 and R are. I can put it into the slots that FEEL like 2-3-4-5 but in any of those positions the truck runs backwards. Well, I can't start out in 4 or 5 it stalls, but inching backwards.

I have removed the floor pan around the shift lever and I assume the next step is to take the top cover off the transmission, but it's raining today and the soft top leaks, so I thought I'd better wait and get a tarp.

Any input / similar experience appreciated. I searched the -20 TM thoroughly and saw nothing about what's inside that topcover.

Thanks,
Joe

oh PS the engine is NOT running backwards and it is not a sprag front axle.

Yeah, that's what Gimpyrobb said too, and he looked for it and I did too but no luck. If anyone recalls that thread title or who started it or something, that would be helpful. Otherwise I'll probably wait until the weekend to take the top cover off.

Wow, yes, that is my exact problem and I also have that same rail sticking way out like that--I noticed that already. Thanks!

Something else I noticed: the pic in that thread showed an oil seal around that shift rod / shaft? I found an oil seal of about that size, in an envelope, in the glove box. I'll bet that's what it's for.

If I remember right, that is the rod that was used to keep the old Sprag engaged in 1 and R.

Good morning Steel Soldiers! Well it's a dry day and I went ahead and popped that top cover off the transmission. Here are the pics. Might as well be a Rubiks Cube with 9 colors as far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't know where to start. I do have a better camera nearby and can take other angles / better pics if needed. Anyone make sense of this?

p.s. that rod sticking out the back, I was not able to move that like the guy in the other thread did. That's why I went ahead and opened the top cover.

Shifter rail for reverse/ first gear is not right. maybe fork is loose on it, or where the ****er moves the rail is out of postion. Looks like a easy fix.

Good! Can you walk me through a little what to try? I understand that the 1/R fork is the rear-most fork under the topcover.

I can post a pic of where they should be when I get home today. Maybe about 1 or 2. I can't tell from the pic, is the saftey wire undone on the shifter fork?

Hey, i see the problem! The part that is clamped onto the 1/R rod in the front, has a little tab that the shifter is supposed to engage. That tab has slipped out of the slot it belongs in. How do I get it back in?

Ehh...looked at it some more and maybe I'm wrong about that. None of the little tabs are in slots. I'll get some higher-rez pics up here in a few minutes...

Yeah, that's 1/R

I drew arrows on your pictures. The arrow on the pic of the top cover shows the set-bolt that could be the problem. The arrow on the pic of the transmission is pointing at some rust.

I would see if the rear fork slides on the shaft. You may want to take that bolt out and see what its end, and the shaft look like. I'm guessing that's the problem. Check all the set-bolts as per the torque specs in the TM. (Now available again, thanks to the SS team, past and present.)

Either: TM9-2520-246-34.pdf for the 3052 transmission or TM9-2520-246-34-1.pdf for the 3053A transmission. I'm not smart enough to know which is which.

The truck probably sat for a long time and the grease all ran off the parts. The rust is in an area close to the front vent. If the little valve in the vent isn't working, moisture may have entered there. I would spin the transmission and check everything for rust. It's probably nothing, but it's definitely worth a look.

I would also hit every zert you can see with a shot of grease before you put the floor pan back in. Some are easier to get from the top.

AT the worst, I have a top plate you can use. You might want to try and remove(or just loosen) the set screws and tap it back into place. Might try to mark where the rods and forks line up at too.
