Once I got the box out of the way and removed the steering wheel and column, I could get started on prepping the frame etc. The stock reinforcement plate has to come off with all of it's rivets. Took awhile to do that. Also have to drill a 1.5 inch hole for access to the new box's adjustment bolt. That has to go through the frame and the new reinforcement plate. Slow process. The box goes on next, and also the pump goes on the front of the timing cover. Mount the reservoir on the firewall and install the column. I elected to go with the smaller 18" wheel for more belly room. Also you can change the angle of the column from stock for more room. I did both. Then installed the hoses and drag link. A tab on the box has to be trimmed for pitman arm clearance. The biggest issue I had was lack of clearance from the pitman arm nut and the LF tire at full R lock. I have 11:00 x 20 XL's and it was a full contact with the sidewall. Not good. So I rounded off the nut with a grinder for more space and a smoother surface. Did not compromise the strength of the bolt. Then I removed the R wheel steering stop bolt and welded a nut to extend it. With both of those fixes, I now have plenty of clearance. Turning circle was already 40 acres, so not much change noted.

Reply on the porch idea.....I saw a setup which hinged up toward the box. The add on porch looked to be 4 foot wide and was suspended by tailgate like chains on the ends. They had some fold up porch fence posts and used rope for fencing. If you extend truck frame permanently are you not burring the pintle hitch and trailer tongue clearance.
I was going to make a hinge out of two pieces of box tubing one that fits tightly inside which would be the joist for the deck material and the larger tubing would be larger and longer so that the deck joist would rest on the longer tubing from the bolt pin to the end of the bottom of the frame box tubing. I like the idea of a folding porch so your truck is shorter and easier to handle and move around.

Ok, I'll try to wind up the PS install. Sorry for the long text, but take a bit to explain it all. Installed and plumbed the reservoir, did have a persistent leak at the return fitting for a few months, finally went away. Also slight seepage at the pump supply fitting, that also has pretty much stopped. Someday I'd like to add a magnet to the reservoir to catch any pump debris. Hoses pretty straight forward to mount, just protect from chaffing. You will need to cut a section of the fan shroud out of the radiator for pump clearance, just don't cut the radiator with the cut off wheel like I did. A bit of solder, just like new. :) I cut some rubber for a form fit around the pump. Took some trial and error for the fender cutout for component clearance. A template is supplied, but I guess there is some variance between trucks. It all worked out in the end. I used some rubber vacuum tubing to trim the fender cut. All in all it went well. One finger steering, can steer around corners and shift at the same time. Road feel still good. Did have to adjust the box, it is backwards from a normal adjustment. Very happy with the results.

I have given it considerable thought to use a folding type of platform. But I need the additional storage above and below. Will have the spare tire and holding tanks under it, and a semi enclosed porch/storage area above, as well as fold down stairs. Since I am using a rear deuce frame, I will be relocating the hitch, bumperettes and lighting/wiring rearward. Thanks for the input though.

If you are down with painting it in 383 green and have a Home Depot nearby, Go to the paint dept and request FS34094 for the color. That FS number is the equivalent to 383 green. Ask for it in BEHR ULTRA FLAT!!! 34 bucks a gallon and it lasts really well as it also the authentic color. You can throw it in a gun and spray your whole 109 in less than a day. If you spray the whole truck you would need three gallons of it using a simple HLVP gun.
Couple of advantages to this are:
FUN for the whole family including the kids because its safe.
It will look EXACTLY like a spec US military paint scheme which , if this is for survival may pass muster in a disaster situ for a active military vehicle...lol
Your thumb and pointy fingers will still be useable !
It looks more serious and meaner in appearance
Blends in REALLY nice in a green area...
Easy to repair for touch ups, (you can roll, or brush even and it will look sprayed...
EASY TO CLEAN UP!!!

Ill send you some shots of the house paint M-35 we have and its indistinguishable. I was shocked frankly that A, HD had the FS numbers in their paint computer, and B with BEHR ULTRA how long its lasted and looks good. Wish I was there to help paint it for you because it really is fun!!

Having seen Scott's work in person I can say it's top notch and his ideas are impressive!

Here are a few pics of my spin on oil filter conversion. Pretty straight forward, no problems or leaks. Almost instant oil pressure on cold start even after a few days. Longer than that, takes maybe 5-6 seconds to build. MUCH quicker in both cases than stock. No more hearing the turbo spool up dry. Also a pic of windshield washer system which is not yet fully installed. And one of my underhood/firewall sound and heat insulation.

Question Can you avoid dry start on turbo by pulling fuel stop, crank engine till oil pressure shown on gauge, shove fuel stop in and grab it and grow? Mark
If you did that with stock canister filters, I believe you'd have to crank it at least 30 seconds to get oil pressure. Likely much longer. I think that would be worse for the engine, especially the camshaft than a normal start. But I'm not an expert by any means on these engines.

Great job Quadjeeper, excellent work! It's fun reading this and seeing all the work you have done. Would you say the power steering was the biggest project so far (as far as time and difficulty)? I'm looking forward to seeing your progress and other ideas so I can "borrow" them just like I've done with lowtech and other's build threads:)

You are probably right on the fuel stop preoiler system. I have heard of people plumbing in a hydraulic accumulator with a valve. When running before shut down they open valve and store oil under operating pressure. On restart, they opened valve and had pressured oil in system before engine turned over. I had hydraulics class in ag school and this idea may have some merit. Mark

Leaving in one hour to preview M109 possible trade so I can start Mad Max Camper/hot tub combination fueled and heated byWMO. HA HA Mark

Wasn't there a long running thread on pre oiling systems and pumps for them? And wasn't the need for them negated almost completely with the advent of spin on oil filter conversions?

GREAT thread on a great build, I'm by no means a purist and from a visibility/safety standpoint, LOVE the additional forward lights & the additional brake & turn indicators. I'm getting ready to start my own m35 camper build. And will indeed start a thread once the truck is actually in my yard... soon. I feel like I'm waiting for a DROS waiting period to go pick something up! Looking forward to watching your progress and stealing good ideas!

Thanks peashooter, glad you like. Yes, the PS conversion was a good sized project, but I took my time and am very happy with it.

I had thought of maybe doing that Mark, but wanted to keep it simple. I want the basic truck to work and operate like stock. Most everything I've added is not required for basic operation. Post some pics of the upcoming Mad Max project when you get it.

Yes, I think there were several on the subject. Spin-ons help a good deal, but a pre lube system would be best. Just have to weigh the pro's and con's. I felt for my application, the filter conversion would be acceptable.

Thanks rassd71. I am a lighting nut anyway, have never had a vehicle of any type without additional lighting. But at least if somebody hits me, they can't say I didn't try to be obvious on the road!
