I'm sure you realize those tires are not speed rated for 80 mph. But sweet none the less. So with the XZL's on it, just how high is that 5th wheel plate??
Yes you are correct about the speed rating. The 55 MPH rating is at the maximum load capacity though.....I'm not even close to half that weight and we are obviously not talking sustained speed.

The 5th wheel plate is now at 66" from the ground... I just might have to take the "spacer" out ..... Lol

i didnt think 16x20s would fit a m916 i like that idea....
Well, I had to grind a bevel around the whole outer edge of the inner lip on the front brake drums and grind a small flat as a relieve for the valve stem to make the HEMMT wheels fit. They installed without modifications on the rears but the studs are not quite long enough to stick all the way through the lug nuts. I will have to fix that...
One nice thing is that the 916's rear boggie has a larger wheelbase, so the 53's have more space between them (3") then on a 5 ton. So now I can run my snow / mud chains if I have to...:jumpin: yey!!

In the Allison HD4070 that I have in this M916, both the 6th and 7th gear are overdrive. Thats why this truck will run such low RPM at 65 MPH.
Other "sweet" features of this electronic transmission are:

-Checking the tranny fluid level from the cab (on the touch button pad display)

-When the Jake Brake is used, the tranny will downshift to the next lower gear as soon as the speed of the vehicle has slowed enough that the engine RPM will not exceed 2100 RPM on down shift. This makes for very effective braking!

-PTO is an electric switch and will automaticly disengage when the engine RPM exceeds 1200 and re-engage when it drops back below 1200.

-Includes a "MODE" button that Allison can program to the individual needs of the operator. For example an "Off-Road" shift pattern or an "Economy" shift pattern can be programed in to the ECM of the tranny. In other words the shift
points can be altered.

-Oh....and you can eat a Doughnut or drink coffee while negotiating city traffic of course.... :lol:

Thats the way mine are, they just reach the top of the nut....barely....maybe they are ok.

Oh and this truck certainly has the Detroit Lockers in the front and rear of the tandems....maybe a USMC option?

Great looking truck! Where did she come from? What kind of trailer are you gonna pull?
She came from the USMC Logistic Base in Barstow CA.

I'm going to put a 2" kingpin top plate from Holland on the oscillating 5th wheel carrier, take out the 5th wheel spacer and modify the ramps to fit.....that should alow me to be able to pull all my trailers. Mostly the M1098 5000 gallon water tender though.

Here is the real question, what kind of custom nick-knacks are you going to fab up other than the 5th wheel to make it a Soni truck?? Only wish I had the shop, time and talent!

both my m916 and m920 are lockers on both rear axles. my 915a1 trucks have lockers on the front of the tandem axle set

I have heard this a couple times, but haven't seen the pictures yet.

The double OD auto sure must make that an easy truck to drive.

Of course you definitely got the 'odd man out' version of the M916s. Not many of those seem to be around, let alone available to the public.
Definitely a great score!
