All this talk about starting fluid is making me cringe. Has no one heard about WD-40? Its starting fluid for diesels! And you wont launch a head into the stratoshphere. Just sayin.

For those wanting to do this....4 4 inch long 3/8-16 bolts to replace the lower bell housing bolts, and a floor jack under the crossmember...the tranny will slide back enough to get a wrench on the bolts. To get it all pulled back togeather I employed one of those big ass ratcheting cargo straps like you use on a semi. Someone abandoned one at my place at some point. I connected it to the jack and to the brush guard and ratcheted it back togeather. I may be gimped up, but I can find a way.

Thanks, 1stSarge, I'm a writer (and photographer) by trade. Which is part of the problem, I sell a few articles and then have to way for them to get around to paying me. Supposed to pick a check tomorrow for a piece I did a few weeks back, and then I"m off to the parts store and the starter shop. This weekend should be full of profanity and busted knuckles.

Look at it this way, you now have plenty of material to write another article about.

Well, most of my work is live music reviews, but I'll give it a shot.



The Watkinssr driveway has been known for failed automotive and motorcycle projectecs since 1977. The place has a lived in, oil stained feel to it, and motorcycle, corvair, and other assored parts hang from the walls of the garage like trophys to the mechanical misdeeds of a lifetime of obsession with wierd-ass motor vehicles. The staff is friendly, but incompetent -- having made a starter change into a career. The mosquitos are relentless and plentiful.

The first set started off with a watkinssr and an unnamed Associated Press photographer with anger issues. The broken off bolt was grouned out nicely after what seemed like weeks of slow abrasion, and the heli-coil was installed in the hole. It was functional, but a bit two high up for my tastes and resulted in too few of the threads having support. The set ended with bent and stripped out starter bolts, a toothless flyflexplatewheel, and the neighbors kid learning all kinds of new ventalation language.

The second set opened with the removal of the driveshaft and bell housing bolts, the tear down of the starter which now has egg shaped holes and no teeth, and a slow slide of the transmission to seqway into a removal of the damaged parts and a declaration that the performer would return after a short break.

After a much longer break than anticipated, we finally got back to the evenings show. There were some really entertaining moments here, like the 8 hour long "search for the jesus clip from inside the starter" number, the creative use of a racheting cargo strap to force the transmission back in place, and even more creative language while the performer dodged mosquitos and blindly put the to bell housing bolts in with a 8 foot long snapon extension and a rusty wobble socket. The "replace the drive gear and nose cone of the starter on the kitchen table while the wife is at work" piece was well executed, but lasted way to long.

The set ended with a irresponsible jaunt across town to pick up a driveshaft, tilt wheel, and console -- which would have best been saved as a closing number after the truck was running. It left me wanting more, which will hopefully be served up during tomorrows encore.

Attached photos include the starter, the boneyard at the starter shop (cuz it looked cool) and Molly, the queen of DC motors, generators, and alternators.

Getting close. Between work, money, and other unexpected issues I've only been able to work on it here and there. Tomorrow I should have it...really....I mean...sigh.

Well...got everything put back in. The starter spins the motor good and fast. I put the new fuel filter on, and bled it. Truck starts up, if you hold down the accelerator all the way and let the starter keep spinning it while it trys to start....it takes a bit but it does start.

Let it run for a bit, it doesn't want to idle...but it does. Put it in gear and try to move, it dies. Sometimes it dies when you just step on the brake--from the load on the hydroboost.


Ok folks....any ideas?
