What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Actually, according to my DMV the registered it at 25,000 lbs so im not really worried about that (the girl there didnt know what she was doing, not sure even if it is 100% legal). I wanted to do a flatbed because im planning on selling my house, building a RV for the bed that could be removed, and building a welding shop out of the XMT.

I haven’t updated it lately even though I’ve done a few things. But my recent though is that while I build my chassis for the ISO I’ll include a floor in it so that I can still use it as a flatbed when I don’t have the ISO on the truck. Now that I’m thinking of it I’ll probably go over there and update it, as well as the thread for rebuilding my engine.

Trailboss, Hahaha, I too am old. I did not have the truck running while I did the initial bleeding. I did start it after the pedal was hard and not sinking. Still had what I consider a great pedal with the assist ( resistance started same place where it was hard without the booster but WITH the boost I could push it another 2 inches or so which is "normal" for air boost. The problem is, when it sits ( 2 days or so ) the pedal has to be "pumped up" again ( it DOES come back without bleeding ) and the fluid in the m/c was down after sitting for a year. Maybe "charlie" is sneaking inside my perimeter and causing problems, or "gremlins". Anyway, was curious if "sitting" was a common cause for loss of pedal in these trucks. I am leaning toward the cups in the m/c have hardened but that doesn't explain the fluid loss unless I start to see where it's going. Thanks for the input and Happy Motoring.
I speculate that your fluid is going into the air pack. I had similar symptoms and it was resolved by replacing the air pack.

Thats essentially what i had in mind. although, extending my trailer about 15 feet might be more than i can chew. Im planning on having the RV on the 5 ton, ISO on trailer for workshop, and extended dove tail for my 2005 dodge cummins. a lot of work for one person.

That’s what I’m doing as well, RV ISO on the truck, with another ISO for a trailer workshop. I would love to have a 40’ ISO for the workshop, but not sure if I could do that with the roads I’d want to travel.

Got my oil changed, which I had not done in awhile. I think i was around 28,000 miles on that oil change. Replaced one battery. I had bad luck with the car quest 8D's having a bad cell, One was a week after it hit it's 1yr warranty and the other after 14months. I replaced it with a Cummins 8D. 2yr warranty on it according to my parts guy and it was only $137.40. I was tempted to buy a pallet.

Also installed a 10lb fire extinguisher on the passengers battery box so i could put a smaller one in the cab corner to free up some space.

Thanks 98G ! Things just weren't making sense. I presume the PAC will continue to make boost until it's "full" of fluid ?
You're getting fluid in the air side, and air in the fluid side. I don't know at what point the airpack will stop boosting, but I strongly suspect your pedal will go to the floor with no braking effect well before that happens.

I'd replace the airpac before badness ensues. I think floridianson has one for sale.

Hey y'all ! ! Been a while since I stopped by because It's been a while since since I actually DID anything to / with the old girl. Life's been "interesting" for the past year or so. Things were starting to get back to abnormal so I thought I'd pay some attention to the ole' M820. She has been sitting silently where I parked her since last August and has served me well as a residence during that entire time. As I said, life's been interesting. Anyway . . . I decided it was time to see how she was doing mechanically and electrically after her long silence.
Checked all the vital fluids (p/s was still low from when I parked her, all others looked good, although there was a tiny amount of oil floating on top of the coolant at the neck), connected the battery cables ( I had one negative terminal d/c 'd all winter to stop any drain possible ), crawled into the driver's seat, went through the procedures (including a couple pumps of the primer to build fuel pressure for the stert-up - immediate pressure indicated on the gauge) wasn't happy when brake pedal went to the floor (becomes bad ju-ju later) but parking brake seems to hold, batteries to power, switch to start, VRRROOOOOM !
:clinto::naner::jumpin: Happy, HAPPY, H A P P Y ! ! ! Oil pressure, great. Air pressure, rising - buzzer off appropriately. Volts - in the green. Checked p/s fluid, turned lock-to-lock a few times and added as needed ( added a bottle of ATP reseal due to the leaking assist ram that caused it to drop during the pick up trip last year ). Recheck all gauges, still all right where they should be, temp starting to come up. [thumbzup] Rechecked p/s fluid, level good for now. Closed hood, stowed ladder, did a walk-around to make sure all clear, no leaks apparent. And theeeeennnnnnn . . .

Wanted to creep forward to fill in the holes dug by the front tires. Put her in gear. Transfer case in low. Released clutch slowly to see if parking brake holds. Near stall, good. Released parking brake ( hand still on handle ). Let clutch out slowly . . . Ummmm, why am I moving BACKWARDS ? :confused::confused: CRAP ! ! ! ( Pretty sure I yelled another word that starts with an F ) Time slows down and speeds up all at the same time. I make a STUPID MISTAKE and pull the shifter thinking I can catch first gear. WRONG ! ! ! Grinding, increasing panic as I realize I'm still heading for the drop-off behind me. Pulled up on parking brake handle but too late. I'm over the drop-off and into the weeds. I guess the parking brake helped but it was a tree that actually stopped me when it contacted the left rear corner of the body. :mad: :roll: aua Shut her down and climb out to see W T F.

(internal monologue begins) OhhhhhKay dummy, so now whatcha gonna do ? Assess, just HOW badly am I stuck ? Small "weedy" tree springpoled under front end. That has to come out before moving forward. Trip to the orange home improvement store ensues to procure a chainsaw ( my 30 year old Craftsman saw gave up years ago ). Saw gotten, used and tree dragged out with my Blazer.

Try some rubble stuffing and all the other "get yerself unstuck" tricks that I could at the time. Same result. CRAP ! Time to call the Towing Specialist.

I'll wrap this up by adding that the truck was successfully winched out of the weeds by Patriot - St. Denis Towing. If you ever need a tow while in / near Lancaster, PA or the surrounding area, I HIGHLY recommend them. The 35 ton truck made short work of my situation and they also have bigger ( 50 ton ) and smaller ( wheel lifts / rollbacks ) to handle almost anything. The damage to the body was a lot less than I expected, but there certainly are some repair projects in the future ( B R A K E S ! ! ! being numero Uno ! The "main" door to the body is more concave than originally designed and the lower left corner needs a few love taps with a ball peen hammer but beyond those things and a couple bent brackets, I got off INCREDIBLY easily. I DO have more photos and will add them later. It's now time to crawl in the box, drink a few brews, weep softly to myself, then suck it up, get some sleep and move on to tomorrow.
Moral of the story ? OBVIOUSLY, NEVER, EVER try to move one of these things under power unless the BRAKES ARE WORKING. ​ Don't be as stupid as Someoldmoose. Thank you and Good Night.

Yep, I'm back ( you poor souls ). The last year has been the worst yet become the best. Finally getting back on my feet and feeling alive again. Of course my first venture back into the truck went badly but I was fortunate the damage was minor. I am excited to be back although not thrilled that my reentry cost is gonna be an air-pac and master cylinder. That's the way of this hobby though and I am happy that I am still here to do it. Nice to know that I was missed in any manner. Happy Friday the 13th and Happy Motoring.

Has anyone thought about doing either bed liner for a paint job or doing a digital camo for their 5 ton? Or is it just something they didnt do while in service and you dont want to do them otherwise?

Second, I did something stupid the other day. I cleaned out the back of my 5 ton which was packed with metal, wood, and junk from when i bought it. So i loaded it up into my Dodge and brought it home for disposal. I cut the wood up and stacked it near the road. The metal from the tarp supports i stacked next to that pile and it was getting dark so i left them there next to my truck. I was going to include them when i sell the bed but the metal gremlins took them. I had forgotten that the next day was garbage day so the scrappers took them.

Third, does anyone know what these are for? I found them in the bed when I was cleaning it out.

I could be wrong but arent the rectangular pieces for batteries? no idea what the other pieces are.

top photo looks like shelter hold down attach points.
-don't trash that stuff, they have a purpose.

I wasn't going to trash anything except for the old wood that was in back. Unfortunately, the metal gremlins got pieces that i was going to give if anyone needed them.
You dont happen to have any images of how the shelter hold down points are used do you?

Nope. Saw 'frame extension' and thought you meant truck.

and 30' truck+tongue+40' connex? Not a good idea. you'd exceed the 75' maximum allowed on interstates,
