Previous 2 owners did near 0 maintenance on the cooling system of my M54A2. I replaced the waterpump, had the radiator rodded, replaced every hose, replaced the thermostat, replaced the headgaskets, had the heads resurfaces 7 thousandths, changed the oil, filled with new sca global coolant, replaced the in tank fuel pump, replaced the fuel filters, rewired the fuel pump circuit. And now Im chasing down and repairing all the air leaks.

My rig came with a 3/4 inch draincock installed in the air intake pipe. I'm assuming it was a modification for squirting starter fluid directly into the air supply as it made no sense as a drain being mounted on the upper part of the air pipe. If there was that much "condensation" in my pipe I'd be in deep cah, cah.
It was difficult to secure and would pop out if brushed against. Replaced it with a 3/4 inch bait tank plug. It's easy to remove for starting while being flush with the pipe when secured.

Like @US6x4 suggested, be careful with the little "giblets" of rubber inside the intake tube. Might even be worth removing the elbow and dumping it out. Yeah, it isn't metal but it sure won't help make your engine run any better or faster if it ingests a bunch of rubber shavings.

The bait plug though is a great idea!

I fired up the old girl in a hurry and got her out of the path of this brushfire we had last Friday. It came right up to our fenceline, luckily I had enough time to get some water on that area so it didn't cross.

All told, it burned almost a hundred acres of nearby desert, but no structures were damaged.

Darn lucky that it didn't cross your fence!
What did you do to pump enough water to stop it there?

Happy to hear that you and your truck survived the mess.

Hi guys I got a question will the PTO off of a M51 work on a M817? Wasn’t sure if the Multi fuel 5 tons transmission was the same as a 800 series. A friend of mines 817 the PTO broke off the transmission but he has a M51 and was curious if he could swap. I told him I would ask you guys. Thank you

Hi guys I’m finishing up the 818. I seem to have a possible light issue. No turn signals or headlights. Now I do not have the rear lights connected is that why kinda like an open? My front markers light but don’t blink. Black out lights on markers work. But no headlights at all now I haven’t dug into checking for voltage at the headlights. I’m hoping once I get my rear lights connected maybe they will work. I have a NOS rear harness installed. Just curious if their is something else to check thank you.

Check your grounds especially at the headlights. I chased mine down to bad ground at the headlight harness to front fender

I got the head lights working lol it was the loose nut between the steering wheel and seat. No turn signals yet they get brighter when turned on but no blink. I checked voltage going to the blinker flash module im getting voltage to it. I ordered a new one. Installed the rear lights, and got the heater wired up and it moves air don’t know about heat yet it gets smoky in the garage when I start it in there. Few more items to put on them I’ll take more pics and post it in the classifieds. So hopefully it will sell so I can pursue my M931A1.

Re-shoed the parking brake. Removed the brake cable nuts and disconnected the bell crank spring. Removed hex cap bolt nut and washer, backed off the hex cap bolt and removed the whole assembly intact. Degreased, primed with Rust Fix and Rustoleum flat black primer. Removed the old shoed by drilling off the burr then punching out the rivet. The old shoes were worn down to the rivets. Bedded the new shoes with an E6000 glue, just to hold in place while riveting. Found a vice mounted rivet tool from DJS Tractor Parts on e-bay that did the trick, had to modify the setting striker to fit my vice. Also installed a new mustache clip. With the new shoes there's barely enough threads on the brake cable to install the bell crank nuts.PBa.pngPBb.jpgPBc.jpgPBd.pngPBe.jpgPBf.jpgPbg.jpgPBh.jpgPBi.pngPBl.jpgPBZ.jpg

Looks like a fun project. Is there more cable length to be had by loosening the adjustment knob on the brake handle?

I'm getting a little more cable every time I engage and disengage the brake. The old shoes were so worn out there was no thread left on the cable to adjust the bell crank nuts. Have just about enough room to try something I saw on Youtube Tactical Repair using heat shrink tape to "lock" the threads.

I got all the lights working. It was the relay thank you for the help . Now waiting on my horn module to show up. I hate to bring this up because it’s been mentioned in other forms. Has anyone ever installed 2” receiver hitch on a M818 or 900 series tractor? I have the Curt hitch I bought for my old Deuce but it won’t fit on the 818 it hits the lights. I’ve seen the one someone made with brackets that use the pintle hitch. But I would like to have the ability to use both hitches without removing it. Just curious. Or I can keep looking for a military trailer with ramps to haul a sxs around. I definitely don’t need the M322. Anyway happy Memorial Day weekend.
