What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

Can HMMWV be possessed? So today I go out preparing to remove the filter that leaked yesterday. The system is very low so most of it leaked out overnight. Put in enough R134 to find any leaks. Fire up the leak detector and hit every single fitting and hose again.

The leak I had yesterday at the filter is now gone - it self sealed?!?! I don't understand how that can be.

And now there is a leak at the fittings where the hoses connect to the compressor. They were sealed tight yesterday! So I tighten both the high side and the low side fittings and no leaks detected. I'll replace the o-rings on them if they leak again.

Shove in the rest of the can so the level is low, but no point in wasting more if leaks come and go!

System seems leak free now, but I'll leave it overnight and see what leaks develop. If it it has no leaks I'll add another can tomorrow.

Maybe I am going to host an exorcism!
Well today, the same old one step forward, three steps back!

I checked the entire system with the leak detector on the most sensitive setting and it is good and sealed - no leaks detected. :) Started it up and the pressures read the same as two days ago so I do not think it lost any refrigerant.

But I heard what I thought might either be belt squeal or maybe a bearing noise! Seemed to quiet down as the engine warmed up.

Also, today the high side gauge reading was fluctuating by about 25 pounds of range! It was not doing that two days ago. That could either be insufficient air flow across the condenser (electric fan was running) or overcharge. I don't believe it was overcharged as the low side was 30 lbs at 80 degrees and high side was flucuating rapidly between 200 and 225.

I filled up the refrigerant, less than one can needed, and it was cold inside, so I buttoned up the engine for now and see how it goes driving on the road.

Like I said, possessed?

Curious do the new compressors come charged with oil?
Is yours a 2 man or 4 man (has rear evap)?

Yes, the new compressor came with oil. However the instructions, which were well written, state to drain that oil. I think the PAG oil absorbs moisture and who knows how long they sit on the shelf. The instructions state the proper amount and type of oil to add for the compressor alone. Since I flushed the system (twice), they also state the amount of extra oil to add for evap, cond, receiver dryer, and hoses.

I have just a front evap, so I guess that is 2 man. I was thinking about adding the rear one as I have seen them for sale but they are expensive. I could add a second aftermarket evap for the rear which would be reasonable. But I have had so much troubles with an aftermarket system that I think it is better to leave it alone - at least for now.

You would need to add another condenser to add another evep.

Installed the second and third door today. Had to call West Kentucky Surplus to ask questions and have to comment on the great service by Adam and his staff. So easy to get on the phone and answered all my questions. Doors open and shut perfectly. Lightly swing door and it latches by itself.

I do have a question for the group though, I know these vehicles are modified and not everything fits like a civilian vehicle. But I do have gaps in the rear upper part of the back doors. What does everyone do to seal that. I’m familiar with weather strips but at the top of the door is a good size gap.
Thought I would respond to the question I had about the gap in the upper part of the door. Looks like my issue is common and the have a solution. I ordered this. Option for two and four door.

Ordered X Doors from West Kentucky Surplus on the 1st. Just got off the phone with the shipping company, and they'll be here Monday. Hopefully they make it here in one piece.
Congratulations! Send pics when installed

Purchased a crimping tool to more properly repair/recreate Packard connections. Should also work for the older Douglas connections too. Used but fully functional for about $30 shipped. I believe Buchanan was purchased by Astro.

Slowly (painfully) but surely, I'm getting there with this build. I've got the outside just about done - still need to run antenna cables, etc. I've still got to get the markings put on it, then it's finishing up the interior by getting the gun/can mounts and insulation installed. I've got a full Red Dot kit for it, but I think I'm gonna take a break and make it a winter project.

Looking good. Taking a break is usually a good idea, to let the wallet and back recover.

I put the DuraVee in the shop for its annual service which includes draining all the hubs and differentials and inspecting the magnetic drain plugs.
Nothing was found but the normal "mud" but no detectable particulate matter large enough to be detected with ones finger tips.
So for all the haters out there that is 20,000 miles with a LMM running basically a LML tune, so about 400HP@760LB-FT torque, this does not take into account the Fleece Cheetah turbo or the S&S injectors.
All the drive line components look good, but I did find a small leak in the plunge boot on the right rear half shaft that was not detected on my daily inspections, this is a Chicom shaft that I rebuilt with OEM boots, the leak was in the middle of the boot in the valley of one of the folds, it looked like age cracking :(
LEAK.jpg
I was buying NOS components at the time, I never thought to check the build date on the boots but it looks like that one must have sat around for a long time.
So I decided to rebuild one of the factory half shafts I picked up from Austin, the Chicom one was OK in that it had not lost too much grease so I will put that back for a spare.
The boots I used today were sourced directly from AMG just before they quit selling to the public and I had to wait for a "run" so they should be fresh!
Here are the tools I used to rebuild the shaft, even though the red handled crimper and ring spreader were made in the good ol USA they were equipped with the slickest plastic they could find, many trips to the Alcohol and many rags to get the job done:eek:

And an hour or so latter voila a rebuilt 10K factory shaft.

This will of course get all new bolts and Nordlock washers.

Had some fun today fixing the humvee 150 miles away from home with limited access to parts and tools.
We went to the florida west coast to bring supplies for the needed after hurricane Milton and my belt tensioner broke.
Found part # 910032A from litens and meant for another engine but made it work (for those stranded in the middle of the road)
Was able to replace and come back home driving instead of on a wrecker.
Already ordered a new part from hummer parts guy and new belts. Also a new sanden AC compressor as mine got damaged in the process.

Well, after doing a second AC flush and after installing the second new compressor, the AC does not seem to be working perfectly. When I first start the engine and turn on the AC, I get what sounds like belt squeal, again. That was my original issue, well that and no cold AC. Now the AC seems to start blowing hot air, but after a few minutes it does seem to start to blow cold. So that is a good start.

After a week sitting, I again ran the leak detector across the entire system and no leaks found it its highest sensitivity. Putting on the gauges, it did not seem to loose any refrigerant over the week I let it sit.

Restarting it, when I turn on the AC, the high side reads about 125, which is super low, and low side about 25 which again is super low. After running a little while, the high side goes up to about 150 which is still low according to the ambient temperature/pressure chart with the low side still around 25. This indicated to me that I still had it low on R134.

So I put in a partial can until I got the low side up to 30, and high side 175. It does blow cold air. But I do have belt squeal. Belt squeal goes away if I turn the AC off.

Will continue to investigate.

Took the truck to Hidden Falls Adventure park, what a beast, got to use the brake modulation technique.

On a different note, has anyone done business with ComTac? I bought a voltage regulator and 2 air filters among other things and got a used rather than new regulator that had clearly been spray painted black and only one filter. Bummed but I'm waiting to see how they resolve this, wanted to see if this was a common occurrence. Will update this post when I find out. Also, if you returned your used regulator to ComTac spray painted black to act as if was new... shame!

I've never done business with them because of their deceptive wording on a lot of their products. Things such as "meets OEM specs" but is also "25% stronger than OEM", all while being way cheaper than OEM.
Some of it looks like it's straight out of the shipping container from China.

If you want OEM parts stick with MacMotors, HummerPartsGuy, and Kascar. They are well established and reputable. I've had great customer service from MacMotors in particular when I received a part that was mislabeled in their inventory system because it was coming into them as the wrong part. Craig took very good care of me getting that sorted out and taken care of.
