Well I've been busy since I have to stay home. Cold set valves today, buttoned up the inspection cover. Did the air filter a few days ago. Finally moved it into the shop, and now I'm going to regret starting this project lol. I don't honestly know how or why, but the air filter probably had close to a quart of oil in the bottom of it, not just the carrier that holds the filter element, the entire can! That block sure is pretty, It really is!

Did you buy it like that, or is that paint job yours?
I found it not even 20 minutes from my house after looking for a good month for a donor block since the previous one had a crack stemming from a valve seat. And thank you, I did the paint. This is what it looked like when I picked it up. 20200324_233404.jpg

Wow. THAT is a major "makeover"!

How did you prep it (before painting):

- Liquid stripper/rust remover?

- Or Sandblast (but that wouldn't be advised INSIDE the cylinders would it?)

- Then, primer + 2 coats?

It went straight to the machine shop, so it got the hot tank. I didn't have to do much of anything. Funny part of it all is I got back from machine work in Dec of '17. It sat in my shop with a not very well sealed bag over it with only a little bit of WD-40 coating the cylinders for almost two years and didn't form any flash rust anywhere. I attribute that to having a climate controlled shop! 😁 I really didn't shoot any primer on it until late February. And even then, since I was doing multiple things at once, it never got a full coat at any one time, even the OD. It's not how I usually go about refinishing a motor, but that's how this one went. 1109171628.jpg

Day whatever of stay at home because of scary virus. I couldn't stand to look at the silver that someone else had decided to spray all over the engine bay. So, I tore everything apart! I have no rhyme or reason to my disassembly, I'll do a little bit at a time. I'm in no hurry, so I was only using a putty blade to clean off the fender wells after a good power washing. Four layers of paint on them, boggles the mind. 20200326_104416.jpgThey still need blasted inside and out before they get hung again. I know with the frame being dirty, I'll eventually need to pull everything off and do it as well since it's black. Is anyone still keeping track of what day it is? Now the dash is disassembled, stripped, primed and repainted. I'll do the instrument cluster soon. I now have a greater understanding of what dad did during his time building both of his trucks. I've cleaned up more threads and bolts than I ever imagined I would. My light switch wasn't the right shade of OD, so I had to paint it as well. And a little silver Sharpie did the trick to out the lettering back on. I'll get a paint pen at some point and do them again. If anyone reads this far, does the push button for the glove box get painted too? IMG_20200328_223043_718.jpg

That sure is some real nice work. It looks mighty good!

Don't know what OEM was, but for my two bits the chrome finish on the glove-box button looks fine.

You know, just the old "don't fix what ain't broke", is what I'm saying. But me? I don't know nothing.

Thank you again, I'm just doing what I can in the time I have to finally try and make my A1 pretty again. I like the shiny button too, although I can see it most likely being OD. I imagine I'll just leave it. I did some more work on the cluster and gauges today and prepped the surround of the dash. I'll post that stuff up tomorrow.

hello all,
haven't been on in awhile. i have been busy with our restoration of our 1962 M170. it was used on the flight line at a local air base and we bought it from a fellow miltary vehicle restoration club member.
as you can see it got down and dirty. we had to even replace a few crossmembers too and fab up one of the lockers due tp they don't make these anymore.
we just got the bow mounts shot with a laser and rewelded back into place.
but the rest you can see in the pics!

Was not happy with this mess, steering wheel was froze on and none of my pullers would work. Little bit of Kryoil and some heat finally persuaded it to come off. Now I'm waiting for the steering box rebuild kit to show up. 20200401_150519.jpg

hello there!! yep new concrete added last year and she (my little drama queen) is a golden retriever and you know who owns that garage too, I am just a renter!

Thanks! It was in dad's "collection" when he passed lol. I just opened the hole up and installed a heli-coil so it would actually thread on, the threading was a little worn out. I have a practice pineapple grenade I was going to use, but I don't care for the angle of it, doesn't feel right. So, I'll find somewhere else to put it.
