that would be a very simple mod. The high beam switch would make a good switch for the ignition system. Im not sure how the ignition switch s wired but that does seem a very easy fix for a common problem

if you want to keep the stock automatic system and add a manual capabilty the get the light blue wire that runs into the control card. Splice a wire to it through a momentary switch (like a starter button) and to a good ground. Works great

sounds like a glowplug issue. if they are good (probably not) then switch to a manual system or at a minimum a kicker bypass at the control card

you could wire in a hidden toggle switch into the starter relay wiring. just mount it somewhere and flip it when you get out. I would mount it in the ashtray or in the dash with a Foglight switch label under it

I think that is a proportioning valve and doesnt have much to do with the rear brakes. When you were looking around and could you see anything leaking from the rear of the wheels. sounds like a rear wheel cylinder or line gave out.
