Got a new deuce, have some questions from under the truck.

Very nice truck - I am envious. And now the fun begins... Get some TMs and enjoy. If you're looking for originals for the cover, you would need the plate and gasket: ACCESS COVER 7520956, HOUSING GASKET 7520957 respectively - both on ebay if you search. Not cheap by any means... but nothing is...

OA-331 Rear Main Seal Replacement - Anybody interested?

No worries - hope it helps - the seal number posted in #1 worked very well. I recommend it. - Bob

OA-331 Rear Main Seal Replacement - Anybody interested?

Finally, all the parts in place. If you install right, this is what she should look like... Had just enough time and daylight to install the flywheel. I couldn't find torque specs anywhere, so I check some of my truck manuals and settled on 100 ft-lbs. Anyone know any better? Well -...

OA-331 Rear Main Seal Replacement - Anybody interested?

Finally - out in the truck... It was a perfect day, not too hot, not too cold, not too windy...:-) Already cleaned up the bellhousing... cleaned up the crank surface as well using a scotch bright. Note the oil pan is off and the crank is protected with a bag and duct tape.

OA-331 Rear Main Seal Replacement - Anybody interested?

Note the different size cap screws. Oil slinger is in the pictures too. The cap screws have a copper/bronze sealing washer under the cap. The TM says to pitch and replace but I didn't have replacements so I left as is and simply added some non-hardening gasketcinch under the head. These...

OA-331 Rear Main Seal Replacement - Anybody interested?

And now the install. A few notes: there is an "oil slinger" on the rear of the crankshaft, looks like a big spring ring, like the ones you find inside of some lipped seals. The TM says it was added to engines after # 118193. Also make sure you position the crankshaft to permit access to the...

OA-331 Rear Main Seal Replacement - Anybody interested?

OK - so I finally have everything prep'd, cleaned and ready so today I installed the seal and the flywheel. Still need to do the oilpan. Anyone working on their gasser should try to find a copy of TM 9-8023-1 and the parts TM 9-2805-222-34P. The reprint of the 8023 that I have is still...

OA-331 Rear Main Seal Replacement - Anybody interested?

Hey guys, been around for a while and checking in but haven't posted in ages; been way too busy. I have finally finished up the rebuild of the transmission in my M36 after the woodruff keys stripped out on 2nd/3rd. That was a lot of work, but well worth it from a learning standpoint. Lots of...

Who has the oldest VIN on his truck?

Mines an unmolested gasser, M36, Number on the frame, drivers side reads "M36" "142046" No data plates, the axle date code seem to indicate it is a '56 http://www.steelsoldiers.com/members/rflegal-albums-general-picture10675-m36-id-1.jpg

    Electric Fan on Deuce

I recall reading somewhere that one should ensure that the electric fan is shut off above certain highway speeds because the fixed rpm of the energized fan actually functions a a restriction. I think the idea was to allow it to "free wheel" above say 50 mph. Wouldn't it be simple to install a...

I am trying to find a way to get more cab space out of mu deuce.

You need an M36 like mine, 17' of frame behind the cab. I have considered a sleeper with a standard 12' regular drop side.

    Pertronix..?

Thanks guys, I did a search in the Electrical forum (didn't think of that, only searched the deuce forums) there is a good link - http://www.steelsoldiers.com/electrical/22682-pertronix-conversion.html Apparently a 24v version is special order, or you need to reduce to 12v. The coil...

    Pertronix..?

Hey guys, Does anybody have a part number for a Pertronix kit for a deuce with the OA331 gasser? I have done the site search, google search, etc and found mention of an 1167, which they have, but that doesn't match to the research I did, which would indicate and 1163. Has anyone ACTUALLY done...

    Tranny output seal... which one?

Hey guys, Finally got all the parts for fixin' the 3052 in the M36. Looking at the new output seal I got from ODIron though, it doesn't look at all like the old seal I took out. The old seal had a felt wiper on the outer edge and was about twice as thick. The one from ODI almost looks like the...

What do you think of this Deuce? (pictures and starting video)

Wow, deja vu, look at my avatar. Note the similarities; bumper, lights, etc. Your hood latches from the bottom too. Mines a 56, this is a 65? Is this a retrofitted gasser? Are there any data plates? The serial number is on the frame, left front. Bet its an early rig.

    Sprag Clutch Rebuild / Repair

Not to highjack, but I too have a sprag...seems to work OK but... :jumpin:am fascinated by the REB kit and understand they're no longer available. Anyone got one on the shelf somewhere , or one that could be a take-out? I know you need to replace the gears so there's no longer a difference...

    Xtreme 4X4 Deuce bobbed(Spike TV)

I wanna see how they're gonna get the 'zuk in and out of the bed easily. I want to do the same with my M36, but the ramps are going to be daunting! Maybe you can "hop" the 'Zuk in? Anxious to see the rear suspension too. I vote bags. But I suppose the truck's already built so we'll just...

    Old 331 gas deuces?(M108)

I have a gasser too and I like it. Mine a longbed M36. Note the difference in the trannys vs. multifuels; your OD is 1:1. I just picked up a reprint of the TM for the engine/clutch on ebay for a reasonable sum. Looks like he listed another. I thought it was an OK deal, might want to get one...

    Second Gear

Look at the manuals. Take one of these apart, I have, its laying on my bench. There are two woodruff keys locking the 2/3 sychro sleeve to the mainshaft vs. 15 splines for first gear. As an registered engineer, I can tell you they are not the same in terms of load capacity. As the owner of...
