So I connected up 10 KW (nominal rating) of water heater elements in a plastic barrel full of water for a load test. The generator didn't even bat an eye. I let it run for an hour and then ran it unloaded for 5 minutes to cooldown.
My clamp on ammeter showed a total of 83 amps to the heaters...
For load testing this prior to hooking up to the house, I should be able to hook the ground to the already driven ground rod, and ensure neutral and ground are tied tougher at the generator right? I know that when it comes time to connect to the house, generator ground needs to connect to house...
2 3500W elements and 2 1500W elements will get me 10KW for a grand total of $28, add in some switches, wiring, and enclosure and I'm in business, just need to find a barrel.
Thanks for the tip.
6 of those would get me up to 9KW, but would cost $120 not including the wiring, outlets, enclosure box, etc. Don't think I want to spend that kind of money.
I am reluctant to run the thing unloaded for too long to prevent wet stacking. I s'pose I could reset the convenience outlet and get out SWMBO's hair dryer for at least a little load.
Dieseladdict,
Thanks for that info. I only put around 2 gallons of fuel in it, still reads just above 1/2 whether running or shutdown. I'm thinking I will unbolt and remove the sending unit and test it's resistance before going to much further.
I also need to check out the fuel tank sending unit, reads 1/2 tank of fuel even with the machine off.
Additionally, there is no power at the convenience outlet. I tried running my air compressor from it, and tripped something. Didn't realize my compressor was rated at 15 amps. Stupid me. Is...
I just had a similar issue with mine today during my initial start following fuel drain valve replacement. Would dead crank fine, but when I tried to start it I got nothing but a clunk sound, like something was pulling too many amps not allowing enough current to the starter. Eventually I dead...
I've restarted it a couple times since the initial shutdown and it fires right up with no issues. I guess I won't worry about it if it doesn't reoccur.
Currently investigating homemade load bank options.
Its ALIVE!!!!!!! Diesel engineer from work came over today, we added coolant, checked the oil (brand new - still light amber color), checked all of our connections, and gave it a final once over.
Dead cranked it a few times and everything sounded good, no abnormal mechanical sounds at all...
Daybreak,
Thanks for the info on the fuel lines, but everything on this is brand new. It had the factory reset in 2012 and only has 16 hours on the clock. It just had a leaky drain valve and dead batteries from sitting in the snow at Ft Drum.
Got home today to find one of the Red Tops was fully conditioned/charged, so I swapped the charger to the other one. The charger has already paid for itself.
Sorry for being OT, but we had a squad of Marines provided security while we went through a refueling overhaul at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. We had to feed them, and they stole every **** spoon on the mess decks. The cooks constantly complained about having to buy new ones.
I received the new well nut M-35Tom recommended, and finally had a little time today to start putting things back together. I was able to get the fuel tank installed, most of the sheet metal connected up, and all the wiring and fuel lines. On my next day off I need to get the radiator installed...
