Well, I'm pretty handy, so I can do most of it myself. :grd:
THAT SAID, there are still a lot of former Hummer dealers (now under the badge of some other GM dealership) who still carry parts & who still service all the Hummers that they've sold to customers in years past...
All you have to do...
Some great info here guys... THANKS! [thumbzup]
Keep sharing your winch installation specifics, & PLEASE post a few pics!! :jumpin:
(BTW: I'm especially interested in any 12V or H1 installation specifics!)
@TedG: Nice lookin' PAIR of Humvees!! I'm jealous! Was one justified by saying it could be "the wife's Humvee"?? <LOL>
...
@NDT: Yes, I've heard good things about the Milemarker Winch. I'd like to discover their ease of installation, reliability, and the impact on the approach...
Thanks everyone for the kind responses!
Well the plan is to SLOWLY make it look more military, but I don't want to jump there right away.
I had actually been looking for one with a faded paint job, thinking I could repaint in OliveDrab, but the ones that I found w aged paint usually...
OK, here's the story...
I looked at many of the ex-military Humvees that were available recently & either found them to be in need of much work (which equals future $$ to be spent), or they seemed to be over-priced (equals extra $$ today), or they had been highly modified to the owner's...
:ditto: Good Advice! Post Pics and ask for opinions, but don't give price or location or someone else might snag it out from right under your feet!!
THAT SAID, be sure to look the truck over for rust, esp at the cab-to-frame mounting points. Ask what sorts of repairs have been recently...
I agree!
Could also be grease washout caused by a bad seal.
In MY case it was caused by a combination of too much preload and the use of the wrong grease.
Too hot to touch is TOO HOT!
Suggest that you pick up an IR Thermometer Gun to check your temps (available pretty cheap from Harbor...
OUCH!!
Shame on you for damaging her car!
Nice of her to eventually take the blame, BUT YOU KNOW that when she retells this story it will always be YOUR FAULT!!
Looks Fixable... a little pull hammer work, some body filler, a little paint, a new window, and "whala" its good as new...
IF they were driving thru the middle of a JUNGLE I could almost agree w the judge...
But in an urban environment the Camo sticks out like a sore thumb!!
Of course there are possible PROs & CONs to increased popularity of any vehicle.
It always AMUSES me how paranoid some members are on here about adding new inexperienced owners to our hobby.
There are ALREADY PLENTY of inexperienced Deuce owners out there today.
Some are smart...
:ditto:
I couldn't agree more!!
In MY Humble Opinion (IMHO) Ian & Stacy do a great job with their respective shows! I enjoy watching them for the technical advice given, for the creative projects & ideas, and merely for their entertainment value. Allows me to be exposed to some high $$$...
The Deuce OD & Non-OD Trannys are direct bolt-in replacements for each other.
Although unless you have a Gasser most people now have the OD Trans.
A 1.25 output rotation would tend to indicate roughly a 0.800 ratio.
Which seems to support the numbers I calculated above.

FYI: I started another thread related to this topic
http://www.steelsoldiers.com/5-ton-up/44115-spicer-6453-od-tranny-info.html
A couple of sources are listed there.
HOPEFULLY this thread will eventually help us to find 6453s at a reasonable price.
What is the final drive ratio (5th gear) in the Spicer 6453 OverDrive Tranny??
Who has these Spicer 6453 OverDrive Transmissions?
-$1975.00 for a TEAD rebuilt unit in the shipping can at Eastern Surplus.
-Others??
Looks like you are doing approx 70 MPH at 2800RPM?
Is that what I'm seeing??
Using the numbers calculated in my above post, an OD Tranny would provide roughly 69.64 MPH at 2800 RPM.
Seems to agree with your results.
Even so, I'd STILL like to have someone confirm the final drive ratio of...
OK, I just ran the numbers...
Assuming a non-OD Tranny 1:1 in 5th gear, 1:1 Transfercase Output in High, 6.44 Axle Ratio, 11x20 Tires (42" Dia, 131.947" Circumference).
This will provide 19.40 MPH for every 1000 RPM that the engine turns.
So at 2000 RPM you'd be doing 38.80 MPH
at 2200 RPM...
Yeah, I know my Deuce will cruise on the highway "comfortably" at 50-55mph.
& I was just trying to determine what to expect in the M39 Series with the non-OD Tranny.
THANKS "vtdeucedriver"!
I had a feeling I'd lose approx 5mph with the non-OD Tranny.
You have confirmed that!!
Looks...
