Problems with Newstar m35a2 inner axle seals

FWIW, my experience when I had to re-do axle seals I had "just" done was a bad seal in the keyway. It matches what @gringeltaube said. The axle seals themselves were ok. As annoying as it is, you have done it before and you will be even quicker repacking the bearings and sealing the darn keyway!

    One year ago today

My full time job is stressful, responsible and has nothing to do with trucks or mechanics. I have my truck activities as a vent and to balance my brain. I even transport 50,000 lbs excavators for a company I know, on the side, just because I love heavy trucks, hold an unrestricted CDL and it...

    M35a2 Deuce NO START

.....while cussing at it, loudly. That seems to make all the difference in my projects, lately.

    M35a2 Deuce NO START

I am just an amateur. You have been very thorough and established that - the truck gets fuel from the tank all the way to the injectors - the injectors pop off (visibly!). Thanks for posting the video! - the engine turns over at acceptable speed For completeness, you may want to check air...

Steering shaft - stripped threads - what size die to recut?

@MarkM Yes, it was SAE fine thread. I looked at it but the nut really only holds the steering wheel down so it does not slip off the splines. I doubt that the coarse thread really makes a difference. The truck is a cabover, so the steering wheel is almost horizontal!

Steering shaft - stripped threads - what size die to recut?

Thank you all! I ended up with 7/8-14 and it worked fine the first go. @Welder1 I did not consider metric (because the truck is not, but that would have been another way to go, for sure) - although the closest, the 13/16 die is non-regular and hard to come by (I found a place that has it) -...

Steering shaft - stripped threads - what size die to recut?

@silverstate55 Yes, that is essentially what I am asking; I am just not sure which die size to go for with what is essentially a 0.82 inch rod to cut threads into.

Steering shaft - stripped threads - what size die to recut?

Not an MV but a 1972 Kenworth cabover. Finally got the steering wheel off, but even after rounds of PB blaster, tapping, and pulling it required so much force that the steering wheel nut stripped the threads at the end of the steering shaft. The shaft is a smooth 0.82 inches all around now...

And I Thought Their Cars Were Ugly...

@WillWagner I thought I recognised that truck from on here, years ago. It is an M1090 dump truck, right? I know he had all the war pig kit and a nifty tarp to close off the cab.

Can't get the engine to idle

If it is bad, consider disconnecting the lines and using compressed air to blow them through, starting at the front, towards the tank. Don't want the gunk in your injection pump. Then off comes the tank for a good wash!

    Another FDC bypass question

Perhaps you could use the "DANGER" arrow that is used for the tachometer and apply it to the gauge, so it shows above 1200F as "Danger"? Cheaper than a new gauge! Available on your favourite auction site using "military tach danger sticker"

    Another FDC bypass question

From years of reading this forum, I have concluded that - max pre-turbo EGT should be below 1200; this is also meant to mean "sustained", not just a "blip" - the LDT is happy and will run forever at 2,200 rpm As far as my LDS is concerned, "what's a hill?" He, he, he

    Door stop problems

I have a spare door that likely has that part, if you need one.

And I Thought Their Cars Were Ugly...

In fairness, the LMTV Steyr cabs are later. 1980' . Not bad and the visibility is quite ok. For military use it should have a split windshield with flat glass (for safety and ease of repair). That cab was never, ever, not in a hundred years, designed to accept any form of armour. The Brits used...

    Runaway Deuce engine

Also to consider: - a "runaway" is an engine that revvs up ungoverned because it runs on an alternate fuel supply, rather than the metered, controlled fuel supply that is normally used. An example is the Detroit feeding on crankcase oil that @Floridianson mentioned, or a conventional diesel...

    One of my dream trucks!

Well, the mechanics of it won't scare you. Great opportunity to show some "plug in the tablet" newbies what old school wrenching looks like. I see the oily residue on each wheel...... if she is complete she will likely run and drive, but needs the usual attention to wheel brake cylinders...

And I Thought Their Cars Were Ugly...

Don' t mind the van (they are a utilitarian post-WWII design intended to be cheap to make with straight panels and easy to maintain and fix) but wow...the price.....

    M108 deuce wrecker engine swap

That will be one nice truck! It always amazes me how intricate the solutions to some demands were; today you would install some short LED light bars that turn night into day. Back then there were the bracketry and swing-out arms for the work lights that were nowhere near the brightness of...

Can't get the engine to idle

https://www.chinahanji.com/01_hd90100.htm I bought mine directly from them. I am sure someone, one of the vendors, imports them, but don't know.

You SEE looks as new as they get! How many hours? Does it have all the crazy attachments, such as the chain saw?
