    M1009 turns but no start

Over the past few weeks, my truck has been starting with more and more difficulty. I chalked it up the weather getting colder, but now I can't get it to fire at all. I followed the TM on "Cranks but will not start" and have a few questions. I have half a tank of gas. I did an ohm check and...

    shifting question

Barrman is right. And do you have a M1009 or a M1008? The M1009 has no balls in four high due to the 3.08 gears, so regardless of what drive your in, it'll be tough to climb. Four low works very well, but as stated above; will cut your speed and increase rpm dramatically.

    Doghead Mod Failure

The best way to test the relay would be to hook it up and turn the key. Since that didn't work, and the old one still does, you bought a bunk relay. It happens. Return the part for a new one and try again. This relay mod is worth it. That old one, even though it works, will stick one day...

How do you test the starter solenoid?

Thanks, Edpdx. I'll shoot some wires this weekend and let you know what I find. You're right, a fuse box overhaul would be nice. I'm going to look into that.

Clicking sound under the dash.Electrical problem

I'd say pull the dash, fire up all your accesories and pinpoint the noise.

How do you test the starter solenoid?

I, too, have been having issues (that I thought were resolved!!) lately. I occasionanly get the dreaded 'click only'. I have done the doghead mod and have a gear reduction starter. I am able to give it a smack with a mallet to get it to turn when it needs it. What does the smacking fix...

    Block Warmer Questions

I have the lower hose heater in my M1009. It's my first experience with a block heater, so I can't compare it to the freeze plug type. I had to install a new radiator last winter, so I had a perfect opportunity to put the heater on. You'll obvoulsly loose the majority of your coolant on the...

Weird ticking near oil pan/bell housing m1008/1028

After a filter/fluid change, both noises have gone away. It's only been two days, though. The truck shifts better now, as well. The magnet in the pan was covered in slime (slimey metal bits) and no siginificant chunks were found. Truck is running great after the change. I think I'll do this...

Weird ticking near oil pan/bell housing m1008/1028

Just dropped the pan and changed the filter tonight, actually. I'll drive it to work tomorrow and see if the noises stop. My ticking noise was pretty obvious, though. Hopefully a filter/fluid change fixes it. I'll post tomorrow.

Weird ticking near oil pan/bell housing m1008/1028

I know this is an old post, but I am having these EXACT same noises. A ticking sound that seems to be comming from the torque converter area and a whistling noise on acceleration that sounds like a turbo and dissapears right before the gears shift. It doesn't look like this thread was ever...

    Grinding starter?

...Side note: I got a little lucky through all this. When the relay fried, it also fried my solenoid wire and 24V wire in my harness. This was GOOD news, because the two wires melted togather and shorted out, only cooking the solenoid and not the starter motor. This also afforded me the...

    Grinding starter?

Alright, finally worked out the gremlins. The starter relay sticking sent a constant voltage to a solenoid that was already flakey. As a result, both melted. Literally. My solenoid is a solid tube of goo. It got so hot, the solder connections on the outside face melted. So, a relay mod...

    Starter just doesn't sound right

I had the gear that drives the flexplate get ground down before. Even without shims, the gear just didn't have enough lenght on the teeth to engage the flexplate. The local motor shop wanted $250 to rebuild the starter. I purchased the gear from them for $35 and put it on myself. Worked...

    Iowa Soldiers?

Any Iowa (Des Moines area) members out there that can recommend a good diagnostics/repair shop? Preferably someone with CUCV experience? I plan on doing an overhaul of my M1009 and putting some money into making it a more reliable vehicle and would like some 'expert opinions'. I'm not...

Is the starter relay clicking when you turn the key? Glow plugs clicking?

    Stupid Me

It sounds like you've already bled the system. If this didn't work, you may have air deep enough in the system that you didn't bleed it long enough? Maybe try to bleed some more, but only in short bursts with plenty of rest for the starter in between. If you want to save your starter, you can...

    Grinding starter?

@M1008driver: I followed the tech data on the install to the letter (I'm Air Force, so tech data rules my life). I replaced an old gear reduction starter with another and it is 24v. The wierdest thing about the situation is the starter firing on it's own. I plan on checking out my egnition...

    Grinding starter?

@Parlay: Yes it's a 24v system and I'm not sure if I have a pilot solenoid. I'll voltage and load check both batteries individually and togather tomorrow. I'll also get you the part number after I climb underneath and look. @GM-M1008: No, I have not done the Doghead relay mod, but now...

    Grinding starter?

The saga continues.... I ended up buying a 'new' starter (ac/delco rebuild) and the truck fired right up like new. The next day, however, when I tried to start the truck I got the dreaded click. Turn the key after the wait light off and glow plugs cycled, and all I got was the click of the...
