Are you sure it was just the hubs? I just had a wheel bearing go on me at 60mph and it ruined my tire. I'd check/grease them just in case. It's not a big job and the manuals help. This is how my inner bearing came out.
I've got 33x12.5x15 goodyear wrangler MTR on mine. No lift, just had to clip a little chunk off of the back of the front right fender because it rubbed a little when I turned right.
Reassembly and ops check c/w. Total parts replaced: Both front inner and outer wheel bearings, both seals. I have a line a new spindle and have ordred a new tire . The bearings/seals/spindle stayed under $100, but the tire is going to be $250. Four day old tire....such a shame.
Thank...
Ended up getting a puller to do the job. I cut grooves through the race to weaken it, then chissled off the pieces. Got the pull tool on there and it came off....hard has ****. After i got it off, i noticed the spindle was pretty beat up...it looked like pieces of the race had conformed...
I think i may end up damaging the spindle while trying to remove this piece of wheel bearing....is it just the six nuts that are right there to take off the spindle?
Milkman: It looks like i just need to cut the inside part of the wheel bearing to weaken it and use a BFH and chissel to smack it off. Then it's reassembly and ball joint replacement and hopefully more rain so i can see what else i can break ;). I do the same thing...wait until rain and hit...
New problem...I just noticed that the inside sleeve to the inner wheel bearing (the old one) is seazed onto the axle. Before i start attempting to get it off, have you guys any suggestions? I really don't want to make this problem any worse by destroying stuff aua
Akonitony: Good info! I've actually bought inner and outer bearings for both front wheels and everything that goes with them. Hopefully i can get everything changed out before kickoff today. As far as the axel, let me know when you're headed to ohio. It may be a possibility, but i think the...
The culprit! At least so far. Inside wheel bearing...or what's left of it. The axle looks ok, but I'll post pics tomorrow and see what you guys think after i get it cleaned off. I plan on checking the other wheel bearings, brake lines and a list of other things you fine gentlemen have...
The drive shaft doesn't seem overly loose....i did hear grinding when i drove, but pretty sure it's from the bum wheel bearing...we'll find out in a few minutes when i finally get a look at the thing.
Alright...I'm stuck. Can't get the rotor off, and the manual is pretty vague...here's a pic of how far I am. I have a the four prong socket, but it won't fit. I'm obviously doing something wrong/missing a step. Help??
HA! CROM 1 - Caliper 0 ! Busted the head off of the other bolt, but with heat and mean set of channel locks I got 'em off! Thanks Bronconut!
Now to find this bearing..
Both sides spin, only one makes noise and only one locked up....can't get it apart to inspect until i get the caliper off, though....prolly have to cut the busted bolt...
No, it's an auto...i have the army manual and it simply says "remove two mounting bolts ... remove caliper... They have a hex head on the inside ends...i'm afraid to try tapping yet until i find out for certain that's how they are removed..
