OK. Pulled the fuel pump off only to find that it pumps and holds a vacuum. LOOOOONG story short...I replaced all gaskets, hand pumped fuel through the system (out of the filter) until only tiny bubbles were left and tried to start it. No dice. So, I figured; let's just start from square one...
Alright, starter installed and working....time to tackle the fuel issue. I'm going to hand pump fuel up through the filter and turn over the engine to seek if I can get fuel to flow first. If that doesn't work, I suppose I need to troubleshoot the lift pump and the fuel pump, right?
Motor guys out here wanted minimum $200 for a rebuild! The worn gear drive only cost $35. I had them check to make sure it still worked (works fine!) bought the gear and rebuilt it my **** self! Not too much to a starter, it turns out. Now I just need throw 24V at it when I get to work to...
Having the starter looked at tomorrow to see if it's worth it to rebuild. Looks like an AC/Delco goes for about $90 on Ebay, worst case. What do you guys think about the flywheel teeth? Is it a 'while I'm at it' job, or are they ok?
On top of that, I still need to figure out the initial...
Thanks GPrez. Is there much of a benfit to converting to a 12v system?
Also, I managed to pull the starter before the rains came...I'll have pics posted of the starter and the gear it connects to on the truck.
The starter seems ok, though I'm not really sure what to check for. The...
Well, I was able to pull fuel through the main line comming from the fuel pump and was then able to pull fuel through the outlet port on the filter housing using a hand vacuum pump. So, I had fuel where it needed to be. However, my starter decided to finally crap on me. It begins to turn the...
Great advice, guys. And I appreciate the history BigRed! Correct me if I'm wrong, but before I dig into replacing the lift pump it looks like I just need to suction fuel through the filter? BigRed: Do you mean the fuel filter inlet hose ((12) in the tech manuals)? And I'm assuming that to keep...
Thanks, guys! Lift pump? Sounds like a plan. Of course, I'll have to wait until tomorrow to get one as nothing is open today. IF that doesn't solve it, what's next on the list of possibles?
Also, would spraying WD-40 or ether into the intake while cranking help or hurt?
I'm currently trying to crank the engine with both vents closed (thanks 91W350), but the batteries are prettly low. I've got them charging now. Also, when I crank the engine, it sounds like there's a 'low' spot when it turns over. Is this a possible starter problem?
Wallew, Allrevup: Thanks for the replies. One thing I should have mentioned is that the truck was starting/running just fine before I pulled the filter, which leaves me to believe I or my actions are the probable causes of failure here. Gas cap off, top vent open, pink IP wire pulled, half a...
Allrevup: That's the video that gave me the idea of running the line up to where I can see it from the driver's seat. Based on the tec-manuals, I believe I'm watching for fuel in the right spot....anyhow, I'm getting no fuel comming out of nowhere...
Update: After letting things cool off, the engine will turn over again. This eliminates a burned up starter, right?
So, I'm in the same spot I was...unable to get fuel out of the tube....any tips, tricks?
It rained all day yesterday and I can feel the mud drying already.
OK, a simple fuel filter change has turned into a nightmare. Here's the deal: I drained the existing filter by loosening both vents (top and bottom) pulled the old filter off, pre-filled the new one and installed. Tightened the lower vent, left the top vent open and fuel cap open. I ran a...
I'm in the same boat right now....pulled a leaky radiator and replaced it with a used radiator that, come to find out, also leaks. Pulling it out is easy. HG Adams is right; you do not need to remove the fan shroud to get the radiator out...just be careful when you install the new.
On a side...
Looking to install a freeze plug style block heater. First deisel, first winter with one. Anyone have an exact location/pic of where the freeze plug to install the heater is?
