It has been a long while since I have driven a non-winch truck, so I will not speak to that.
The winch does add front axle weight; on a w/w truck, the front axle will be significantly closer to its rated weight when empty, compared to a wo/w truck.
An empty w/w truck may therefore have more...
Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I had hoped that it would not point to the head gasket. Oh, well.
No oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil, just a little mess. Maybe I get a little more time out of it. It is parked for the winter anyway.
It is easy to get a little discouraged...
When driving for a prolonged time, especially at highway speeds, I have oil leaking from what appears to be somewhere in the front upper region of the engine. When you open the hood, the front inner part of the hood is oily; it looks fan-blown, but I am not sure if the oil seeps out somewhere in...
This site feeds all sorts of MV addictions, so wanting to know specs by heart is an easy one. Just go to "Resources" - "Technical Manuals" (see the bar on top, under the steel soldiers logo) and pick the TM9-2320-209 series of manuals! -20 and -34 have a lot and there is an engine specific one...
Check the data plates on the passenger side dashboard. The weights and measurements plate should say M35A2C w/w. On the plate with all the stamped numbers search for the NSN (national stock number); if it is a factory original dropside with winch, the NSN will end in 0875.
If so, offer $2k and...
I could not determine whether the parking brake was actually working when I applied it at approx 30 km/h (18 mph) to test if it would be of any use in an emergency. However, it does hold the stopped truck very well.
As a relatively new Deuce owner I chime in. Sit down and make a list, for yourself, what you want in your truck.
Split brakes a must? Winch? Power steering? Heater? Hard top? Dropside? Already singled out? 11.00-20 Michelin XLs on it? Just overhauled, with new seals and axle boots? Make the...
Yes, I have a picture!
I took a whole day off to get it accomplished. Safety tested in the morning - no problem . She passed with flying colours. Right after, the flasher module started quitting and the (new) hand brake cable broke. Good timing!
The licensing office (Ontario MTO) was...
Having a turbo has advantages, such as a cleaner burn (even if you are not the tree-hugging type) and a bit more grunt/better pull. Even though the turbo was not intended to be on the engine for increased power, you just cannot help it; there will be better power delivery.
I have seen (never...
Yes, and thank you for pointing me to erik's. I looked at his web site and his cable looks much like the one I got...awaiting his reply!
I did not think of the possibility that the cable might be for a different truck altogether; it has the right length and the right clevis, so I am not sure...
I received a new production parking brake cable, new style. Both the sleeve and the cable itself were of smaller diameter than the original one that was in the truck.
I overcame the problem by making sleeves out of rubber hose to make the various clamps fit.
However, the properly adjusted...
Well said. Same for me. I am not a pessimist by nature, but I look at my truck, there are no leaks, the brake pedal is firm, the engine starts right up - and I am asking myself "what did I overlook?".
Yes, it is the newer style with the adjuster knob on the handle.
I had good experiences with Erik's, but it is not him I ordered it from. I was just wondering if there is an agricultural machinery cable or such that also fits.
x2 ! I ordered my cable from a reputed supplier here at the end of August. Has not yet arrived due to backorder. I, too, am wondering if there is a generic NAPA part that might fit. Anybody?
For the "outer" portion (i.e. everything outboard of the brake backing plate) the inner seal is indeed the same as on the rear. Note that you do not have to install an outer seal in the front (but you can, if you want). If you do the complete front axle, (i.e. pull the shaft, steering knuckle...
I just went through that and asked myself the same. Decided for new brake cylinders. Reasoning: Old wheel cylinder needs to come out, cleaned, disassembled, honed, bleeder freed up, cleaned, reassembled, put back in.
You spend at least 10 minutes, probably more, on each one. You still need new...
Sure! Or you use the industrial sized pressure washer at the station. I told the Captain that we now have a REAL brush truck (as opposed to our pathetic 4x4 F-450 at the station) and a 5ton winch comes in handy when you get a truck stuck and do not have to call the Chief for tow truck...
