Ha ha - that brings back memories - those are the 8-DMRV5's - they were 17" bore and 20" stroke - the RV-5 killed Enterprise as there were quite a few crankshaft failures...
I still work with the grandfather of that engine - the 12 cyl - RV-3 (serial #1 and 2 from 1962 in the Alaska State Ferry...
That's a cool article - I do main engine work and the fleet is pretty small up here so everyone is excited about big changes like this - been up working on some Bergen inline 8's on the Seafreeze Alaska in the same yard...
They pulled the Bergen BRM inline 9 out of the Starbound and are putting...
Pretty normal stuff here :whistle: - just stack 34,000 lbs of steel plate on the 5th wheel and get to moving some serious steel...
The C/P Starbound is getting 60 feet added to the midships and Dakota Creek has been using a HET to tow the bow section back and forth for positioning and mock...
I've seen the machine in question several times at the last two Portland, Or conventions and actually saw them hauling on a lowboy a few months back on I-5 - it is a very well done restoration and it is obvious from the attention to detail they do not cut corners.
I was very sad to hear of...
I have had a 1984 MEP-005a for a while now and got it running well a few months ago but didn't have anything of note to load test it with so I have only briefly run it...
I was having issues with the day tank not refilling and had taken out the float; found that lower stop for the upper float...
PS - the plate says:
10,000lbs@10ft radius with the outriggers deployed (6700lbs on rubber)(2 part line);
20,000lbs@10ft radius with the outriggers deployed (3 part line);
20,000lbs@15ft radius with front outriggers deployed (rear stowed) and boom jacks to the ground.
So riddle me this? How...
Ha ha - you mean like this?
sucked in to 13 - 14ft radius and still lifted the front picking off the rear - not saying it's right as it is most certainly NOT - but it was a thing...
That was only a tad over 12k of load...
My question is how were the booms bent then if you can pick the nose of...
It's a big boy jigsaw puzzle... now THAT is "coming from togetherness"!
And some other fun ones... I get to see a lot of stuff that went terribly wrong - get called when normal goes out the window
Probably not the best wording I chose but what do you think the SWL on the wrecker was based off of? The standards for mobiles include a 3.5 design factor multiplier - if you are within this limit and you go outside the allowable radius the machine will tip over prior to experiencing a...
Oh yeah - there are very few situations where you need to be under the overhang of a suspended load... I always tell the guys I work with when the do it "can you catch that? - what happens if something breaks and it falls?" Most of the time when we need to we'll either double rig it or block it...
Heck - I don't even like doing the overspeed shut down trips for the USCG when they won't let us downwardly adjust the trip speed or just trigger the relay to prove the shut down works - something about manually forcing a freshly rebuilt machine to overspeed hurts the soul...
I didn't get the...
The main signals for basic cranes are standardized - there is some variation once you get into machines that have multiple hooks and have additional axis' of movement like a dockyard rail crane or some of the overhead gantry cranes we had at the steel mill with bridge, trolley, twin hoist, and...
Yep - they are indeed two very different animals - not mutually exclusive but there would be two things wrong with a unit that reverse rotated and then ran away...
The spark ignited machines will not run backwards because the ignition source is not applied when the piston would be in a position...
Yep - most of the direct reversing diesels have either symmetrical cam profiles or the earlier units used two cams and a flip flop linkage to move the rockers from one cam shaft to another (it was a nightmare) - More than one ship has murdered a dock when the reversing gear failed and the astern...
It wouldn't surprise me if they did get some - but I would think if it ended up in outside Moscow that they would've come from the Western Front not the Pacific side... but who knows - certainly interesting to see where all this stuff ended up...
Very nice! I saw a picture of a hot rodded one - fenders taken off, winch removed, cletrac 6 cyl diesel and a single cletrac seat from a civy tractor - and of course it was bright yellow - I'll see if I can find the pic
Matt
JWC - yes - it looks similar to that but only uses one wire - I believe it grounds through the shell - I will have to crawl under there again to get a better look - they tucked it way in the absolute most inaccessible spot on the truck
