A "sprag" clutch should not be a deterrent factor if it's in good shape. The front axle is disengaged during 99+% of operations anyway, and the t-case is never engaged/disengaged while the vehicle is in motion, so it shouldn't be a problem at all. If the truck meets your requirements in all...
I don't think that there was ever an official tanker variant of the M37, but you could probably replace the bed with a tank from a fuel trailer and make your own. It would be an interesting project. :)
Actually, the quoted information is a little misleading. The Budd rims on the front are there simply because they match the ones on the rear so that only one type/size of spare tire is required. While it is possible to install dual rims/tires on the front axle (and it has indeed been done), it...
Hey! If you got in there by helicopter, you can get the truck out the same way. The Army has 'copters that could do it without breaking a sweat! You just have to figure out a way to get them to do it. Offer the task up to a Reserve or National Guard heavy helicopter unit as a training...
Where I used to live (IL) and where I live now (GA), a truck is considered practical transportation, no matter what kind it is. There are places, however, where ANY truck will get you denounced as a "redneck." The way I see it, if you enjoy driving your deuce and someone calls you a redneck...
My daughter's VW Rabbit diesel was fond of running away like that every now and then. She finally traded it off for something else before I could have a look at it. (She lived about 600 miles away from "home" at the time.)
What we Air Force weenies call "uncontrolled contact with terrain?" (The AF has never had a bird "crash." Only "uncontrolled contacts with terrain.") ;)
Nice video! I think I would have left the duals off the front fireasier steering, but the truck was nicely restored. Incidentally, the road looks familiar to me. Too bad it doesn't say where it was filmed.
I grew up in Maquon, IL (about 250 miles SW of Chicago) and have lived in Abingdon, IL for the last 18 years, since retiring from the Air Force. The movers will be here tomorrow to move all my stuff to Lavonia, GA. (My M37 and associated parts are already there.) By Saturday, I'll be an...
Go to G741.org for all things M37. It's a forum much like this one, except it's devoted entirely to the M37 and its variations. Anything you ever wanted to know (and a lot of stuff you never even thought of asking) can be found there. The members are a great bunch and some of us hang out...
White oak was what the government used originally. It's a good, hard wood that weathers well. Maple is harder, takes a better finish if you want a good clear finish, but is expesive as all get out in the sizes you'll need. Hickory is an excellent choice, too, if you can beat the hammer-handle...
Don't worry too much about the leg injury. You can get an M135 or M211 deuce with an automatic transmission. The later deuces are all manual shift, but the clutch doesn't require tremendous leg strength to operate. You could probably handle it okay on the highway where you can stay in one...
Thanks for unbanning me! "Forever" is a long time to be without access to SS! :)
I had no idea that you were revamping the site (or that it needed an overhaul), but I like the way it looks now. Keep up the good work!
The AF used scads of the Dodge crew cabs, which were referred to as "6-pax." The only "militarization" they received was the blue paint and yellow markings. I've driven '60s and '70s models with automatics, 3-speed column shifts, and 4-speed floor shifts installed. I think the new ones are...
I can't attest to all M37s, but in my experience every M37 I ever drove had the light switch above the ignition switch to the right of the steering column. Every deuce I ever drove, on the other hand, had the light switch to the left of the steering column.
