Pretty much finished up the plumbing today.
Started off my mounting and taking care of the vent line for the PP7 valve. Plumbing for the front axle disconnect is setup as well, just need to decide exactly where on the dash it will be mounted.
Plumbing at the engine side of the firewall. The...
With your smaller size it's both a good and a bad thing. Good because it's easier to reach the tight areas and 'bad' because you have to use the mindset of "work smarter not harder" (not really a bad thing honestly). For example with removing/installing the hubs when servicing the axle. The...
Don't know how well tracks and lockers interact, they might fight each other.
Personally I'd go with lockers and a good set of snow/mud chains. With true 6x6 and chains, not many snow or mud areas you can't reach.
Wouldn't count on tracks being cheaper than lockers. Lockers are about 550 to 800 each, those tracks in the last 2 pics are 15,000. Might be able to build a set for around 2000 that would work properly but would be heavy. Not concerned with rolling resistance, the weight to install and pack them...
Only seen 1 picture of the original military setup (was here on steel soldiers) that goes over both rear tandems. Heres a pic of tracks for each individual wheel that apparently came on the older trucks.
A set made using the tracks from a APC (gotta be heavy and difficult to setup)
And...
Large expedition camper build, plenty of room with the 20ft shipping container.
The military did have a 'slip on' half track setup for these trucks with the smaller 11x20"s. Not many were made, think they were rubber tracks. Why not just install lockers into each axle instead?
yep, 5" overall (roughly). Still within the legal width. This stance is about 3" wider overall than the factory duals were. The tires are still narrower than the outrigger feet are when packed up/stowed.
More than it had before. On the bright side though if there is a leak, they are easy to access haha.
Picked up and installed new studs for the middle axle passenger side hub. Inner bearing repacked with new grease and the studs driven in
These are much heavier than the older hub/drum...
Heh not exactly cheap but they are a good choice.
Much cheaper option, and if the fuel is not turned up will help alot with EGT control, is to add a turbo to the NHC250. 200-300F degree temp drop.
Will be making a similar hose guide bracket for each rear axle, haven't gotten to it yet.
Today was more plumbing. Started off by making the 3 hoses needed for the middle axle passenger side hub, about 3ft long each. Didn't realize the pic came out blurry. Ran the hose for the emergency brake...
The list of tools/equipment:
Diesel powered welder (Miller Big 40)
Air compressor
Press
Vice (one from the m816)
Oxy acetalyne torch (I have the small bottles)
Hand/air/electric/hydraulic tools
Possibly a mep 002a generator. Have it but thinking of selling it.
General layout that I'm thinking...
The LMTV cab uses air bags to mount it to the truck frame, helps smooth out the ride. When taking the LMTV offroad you are supposed to cut off the air supply to those bags and pin the cab into a "locked" position which reduces how much the cab can move.
That upgraded air hose is more expensive...
All of ours were locked off and pinned due to being primarily offroad vehicles. Trucks spent about 9 months each year on the ranges. Sorry Coffey1, it's a design flaw that's an issue with regular offroad applications. Pavement it's fine but not with regular offroad use. Those trucks got...
Common sizes, making shrouds would help or could upgrade to a much heavier duty DOT approved air hose to replace all the hoses running to the axle.
Post #415 mentions the difference, couple pics of it further down...
