Rides pretty well with those front boxes loaded and 2 tires on the middle axle balanced. Truck cruises very well at about 55mph. EGT gauge seems to be correct so I have to keep my foot out of it on the longer hills.
No work to the truck today but plenty of use. Started off with about an hour...
Looks good, will you be making other platforms to swap out with as needed? (camper, crane.....)
What about using cam locks at the rear to lock the bed on, like what they use to secure shipping containers?
Got around to cutting the steps off the front boxes and mounted the box onto the passenger fender. Eventually will pick up some hinges so one of the steps can be mounted to the mounting brackets on one of the bumper boxes.
Even with the extra boxes, I'm still running out of cargo room...
Will be keeping an eye out for a donor turbo to install.
Jakes and a transmission with better ratios would be nice, thinking of swapping in a CAT 7155 when this stock trans goes (and I have the money).
With the temps I'm wondering if my gauge is not reading correctly. The exhaust is not...
Mounted the step box to the driver side front of the trailer today. Install went pretty smoothly. With just those 2 mounting legs it doesn't move even when I step in it and bounce the trailer, if it needs more support later I'll add a vertical mount from the bed to the box. For the current...
Your tcase and axles are the same as the m809 series trucks so no worries there. You either have the direct drive transmission, or the spicer 6453 overdrive transmission (same as 809 series). Both are reliable.
Cut the steps off the front boxes today, will post up pics later. The extra weight up front doesn't seem to have affected the steering, only takes 1 finger to turn from lock to lock sitting still on the pavement.
Also took the truck for its first drive since the EGT gauge has been wired in. The...
Agreed, very useful small trailer for the wreckers. Eventually this trailer will have a big brother for the larger/heavier loads of cargo.
Bringing the trailer up to the house tomorrow so the parts can be cut off/attach the storage box. Wires running to the power inverter on the wrecker is not...
Mounted the spare tire carrier from a deuce and a half on it, passenger side by the front corner. Only the top 2 bolt holes fit onto the frame. If it's not solid enough I'll use some angle iron so the bottom 2 bolt holes can be used.
Originally I'd planned to use the large cargo box from...
Familiar with the whole boom flexing at load, but in the video you can see that the last extension was flexing much more than it should at that point. Unless that particular model is designed to flex that much more in the last extension, it was overloaded at that point.
Should be the drag winch run out to the 'upper' frame channel on the rolled truck to bring it upright. Could see the crane flex in the video at the last extension when the truck rolled past its tipping point.
Read that most of the issues are due to dirty air and a lack of proper lubrication in the air solenoids of the trans. Interested in it for the same reasons (powerband) but it will be awhile before I do any swap.
For air supply I have a few extra air tanks going onto the 816.
In ways I feel sorry for this trailer haha.
The m816 has no real bed space so decided to pick up this trailer for hauling the cargo. How it looked when purchased...
Lights work, tires have dry rot issues and there is an air leak when the brakes are activated. So needs some attention but...
I think that would work really well for those lift towing often with these trucks.
Speaking of counter weight mods, added a pair of step boxes from the m939 series trucks just behind the front bumper. Rotated them sideways and moved the snatch blocks up there. The vice had to be moved but this...
Depending on the model the wrecker is either built on the standard length chassis or the long chassis 5 ton. The 816 is on the standard length, and the bed is a little bit shorter than the 14ft 5 ton cargo bed.
Finished mounting the second bumper box today and loaded it up. Next is to cut the...
