To piggyback on Zebedee's idea, what about adding a 4th axle to the rear instead of moving the axles? If it's a non powered axle there would be no clearance issue with the rear winch, maybe a steering tag axle like cement trucks use so it wont hurt the turning radius?
Haha most of that "can do" is because I like to modify stuff, and the wrecker really is incredibly versatile. It can't pull a 5th wheel or have a camper on the bed, but I have 2 ideas rolling through my head on ways to fix that and make the truck more capable

Currently out of state so the truck is getting a break for now. Looks like I'll be moving up to Washington state at the end of the month so truck will have a long road trip coming up

Bumper box #1 is mounted and loaded. Might have been able to squeeze another single block in there but thinking they would get wedged in there while driving around. Stood on the box and jumped around, seems to be pretty solid. Between the box and cargo it's about 300 lbs.
Good to meet you as well!
Here's a few pics of the storage box ideas. Will have to remove the steps from the 2 boxes that will go between the bumper and fenders. With the boxes rolled over to open from the top the vise will have to move as well. Probably place it somewhere on the bed...
Went on a drive down to Phoenix az to meet up with Castle Bravo and pick up some parts for the wrecker and trailer.
First part being some replacement 3/4" cable for the rear winch. Used his 916 to pick it up.
Then lots of storage boxes, a pair of dog bones, and an air ride seat
You're talking multiple generations here and seem to have gotten alot of info mixed up. So, let's straighten out the M809 series info since that's what you asked about.
All of the 809 series has the Cummins NHC 250 engine, Spicer 6453 5 speed manual, T-138 tcase, and the same 5 ton axles. There...
Haven't tried to slide those support legs yet. Have you tried heating yours up yet? Would be worth a shot to have 1 or 2 torches heating up the outer tube right before a pull. Would have to wear a mask with the CARC fumes
Ran to a local hose/fittings store and plumbed in a air switch for the front axle disconnect. Little less wear on the front components is a good thing, will be better once there's a set of desplined hubs installed for the on-road driving.
Started off with a new air switch. The rear port is for...
Been looking in the TM's and cant find the lift chart for the wrecker crane WITH the support legs attached. Anyone know where that info is? Would like to know exactly what the crane is capable of lifting with those legs in use.
Also finished wiring in the EGT gauge earlier. Mounted the gauge...
This one needs to move within the next 2 months.
If I were to buy one I'd put it to use and update some of the drivetrain for better parts availability/speed/fuel economy. According to the TM measurements if the rear fenders and outside wheels are removed it's within legal width.
Truck is...
