    CUCVRUS Repair Projects

I miss Wal Mart open 24-7. Used to work nights so shopping at 0445 was a treat. Then a stunted bureaucrat threw out edicts and shut the economy down. No more early morning shopping. And yes, they had oil filters for my CUCV.

Sounds like a misfire please help!

Home Depot carries the gasoline variant. My original dealer sold out so I had to buy a gallon of it. The good news is once treated, the metering valve should be resistant to oxidation. I added to my post on the chemistry causes with a freshly overhauled IP. Biodiesel contaminated with...

Sounds like a misfire please help!

Metering valves can get varnished quickly with bad fuel and air. It doesn't take much as the fit is very precise. Clean metal from a new rebuild is the problem as most transitional metals are oxidation catalysts for fatty acids. See Japan Drier additive for linseed oil based paints, it is a...

Sounds like a misfire please help!

Sounds like a sticking metering valve. In the far past. I used Berryman B12 spray cleaner to remove the varnish on metering valves. It works BUT it must never be used through the pump or into the engine. Now I use Diesel Mechanic in a Bottle, just as aggressive as the...

Sounds like a misfire please help!

If pushing the light load advance button causes stumbling, timing is correct. Keep advancing timing until pushing the button causes stumbling. Indirect injection is more tolerant of timing. But you could have a loose timing chain.

Expect to pull threads. VW uses lug bolts. Unit bearing and wheel hub replacement time.

    Injector Line

No longer made. Hillbilly Wizard probably has it in used parts. Figure 12, item 9 in parts manual 9-2320-289-34P. CAGEC 11862 means a GM part (commercial and government entity code). SMR PAOZZ means it was stocked for organizational replacement and was disposed at unit level.

    CUCV M1008 wobbling. Help needed

I had death wobble in my M1031 with less than 10,000 miles on the odometer. Replacing the upper king pin bushings and springs helped greatly. The right front tire had a belt failure a few thousand miles later. New 16x8 rims with 255 85 16s positively ended the problem.

    Stalls Intermittently

2 stroke oil will burn in the engine at higher loads. Cold engine idle has very poor combustion, even with straight diesel.

    Stalls Intermittently

The metering valve is an internal part of the IP which can be serviced after removing the cover (3 screws), guide stud, throttle shaft and governor arm. See pages 4-62 through 4-64 on the GM manual GM_STG_16015_05_1C_1987_The_6.2_Liter_Diesel_Engine.pdf available from the TM section here. It...

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

Top quality leather work on the dash! Leather seats are on my wish list..I have a local shop that quoted $500 for the bench and back.

    Stalls Intermittently

Classic sticking metering valve symptom. Idle speed is set by a very weak spring force as the flyweight centrifugal force is also weak. The spring force opens the metering valve, flyweights close the metering valve. When the accelerator pedal is slightly pressed, the idle spring collapses...

    Engine shut off delay?

The ETR solenoid is an electromagnet when the engine is running, meaning it will attract all of the wear particles from the transfer pump, cam ring, timing plunger and governor. These items are hardened steel, the wear particles are sub micron sludge. There is enough residual magnetism to...

    Engine shut off delay?

The device inside the injection pump which shuts off the fuel flow is an electromagnet with a spring loaded plunger. 12 volts applied to the pink wire retracts the plunger against the spring force, allowing the metering valve to open. Likewise, when power to this terminal is cut, the spring...

M1028 and Rough Country 6" lift with add a leaf problem

Ditching the overload springs improved the ride in my M1031 SECM. I installed air bags for load handling, far better than the 50 pounds of additional unsprung weight.

    Horn button?

Stock horn control works with my Klein air horn. My M1031 has on board air so this was a natural upgrade.

    Cucv M1008 4l80E swap

Later 4x4 4L80s used transfer case speed sensor output for speedometer and transmission controller use. I would recommend either have the transmission modified with output tone ring or add a tone ring to the transfer case adapter. Advanced Adapters does this on some 205 transfer cases to 4L80...

    Stalls Intermittently

Most pump diesel contains a small percentage of biodiesel to replace lubricity lost from removal of sulfur compounds to achieve <15ppm sulfur. Unfortunately, biodiesel oxidizes easily and allows far more water to dissolve in mineral diesel. This fact means diesel injection systems will have...

    Stalls Intermittently

While it is possible the light load advance plunger can stick, this can be observed in the drive way. Since the engine has been in storage, I would first look for metering valve sticking. This will cause stalling on coasting since this valve is fully closed on coasting until engine speed is...

    Never ending front brake problems

If there is a brake line restriction, the volume of brake fluid required to cause drag is just a few drops. It won't be easily noticed. The caliper piston dust seals should provide enough force to slightly retract the piston. All it takes is 0.001" per pad.
